Shaft Exit Speed - Rail Guns

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
In that case you need to upgrade the bands - what gun do you have, what length, what is your present band set up?

If you use a lighter spear you will increase the spear speed but not necessarily the guns range.

Adding more bands or larger diameter bands will increase power but not necessarily accuracy!

Most guns have been tested by the manufacturer to give the best all round performance with the standard set up, as a rule if you want more range then a longer gun is the best way to go.
The other alternative to get more power without increasing the length of the gun would be to use a dry barrel airgun.

Many thanks Foxfish for the info.

I am using a rob allen 100cm with 2 x 16mm bands & a 7mm shaft. Any recommendations?

You could try a single 20mm band at 3.5 stretch, two 18mm bands, shark fin spear & dyneema wish bones. (that wont give more power but is a nice set up)
How old are you bands - maybe you just need to replace them with new ones?

I would try just one 20mm band, sometimes one band works very well but you will find it tough to load!
To be honest your gun should work fine with the standard set up.....

You can only get so much from a railgun. Two 16m bands with a short setup is all you can get.

Buy a wood gun or something with more mass to achieve a faster shaft speed. A short thick shaft on a wood gun can achieve very fast shaft speeds.

A pneumatic with a tovarich kit has a very fast exit speed.

Speargun basics dictate that if you want an increase in muzzle velocity then reducing the shaft diameter reduces it's mass or using a less dense material or increasing the power are the only way to make that improvement.
If you're using a 7mm diameter shaft then you might want to try 1/4 inch which will give you a slight reduction in shaft weight. It might also be possible to overcome the dead length of the bands by going to much smaller diameter rubbers and using more bands after all, the longer the shaft is powered, faster the muzzle velocity. Do the math on the cross section are of the bands you are using and see if more smaller bands will equal that same cross section.
If longer arrow distance is what you really want then a longer shaft is the answer.
