Hi all
I was wondering, does the shape of the spear tip impact accuracy? My Rob Allen has a hawaiian flopper shaft that has the tri-cut style tip.

heres my problem: the fish that i hunt live on the bottom, and after the first shot my tip is trashed or at least mashed up from hitting the rocks or whatever underneath the fish, as a result i dont get as good of penetration due to the now blunt tip.

In Terry Maas book bluewater hunting & freediving i noticed that his shafts were threaded at the end, im assuming they were that way so that he could interchange tips.
I dont want to comprimise the accuracy of my gun but Could i do somthing like this with the 8mm shaft that my rob allen has?

Don't know anything about Rob Allens, but I always bring an iron file in my gear bag: with a file you can sharpen the tip anytime necessary before, after and even during your hunting sessions.
Try it, I can assure you that this helps.
PS: Of course if the shaft has a threaded end you can change the tips with no accuracy issue. Just take care that the floppers are not curled.
PPS: what's the size of your RA?

I have done that before, but i got tired of dropping or forgetting about my file. It usually takes a little while ti re-sharpen the tip, after hitting the rocks it mashes my tip down about 1/4inch. BTW My gun is a 80cm caranx

tri cut tips are good for big fish where penatrating the hole bole is the main goal. it penatrates better in flesh and bone but one the other hand if it hits a rock it's $&#$"$". for hole or near rocks hunting, use cone shaped tips as they get less trashed as the area for impact (side impacts) on the rocks is bigger (as oposed to the tri cut edges). i have a rob allen 120 cm and it's great for long distance and bigger fish but i keep the tips away from rocks. for any holed or near rocks fish i use my old cressi apache 90 (with cone tip) and i shot sometimes straight to the rock (with a fish on it's way )
hope it help if it too confusing, i'll try to make it better

you could ask a blacksmith or someone who works with metal about heattreating your speartip a divebuddy of mine did it to his, but don´t know if it realy works, in theory this would make the metal harder. there is however a grimmer side to "shooting" rock and that is the damage to the spear. I see that my 6,5mm spear actually bends somewhat when I´ve been hunting rock, if you have a hole drilled directly into the spear with a pin holding the barb, then you should check if the spear is bend at that point.
