I am looking for good shallow water fins(maybe cressi ) I usually don't go very deep, mostly shore diving around the rocks.Iam cofused between long fins, short fins.I do alot of surface swimming to get to the good spots in my area.

Hi Tog

Welcome to deeperblue. As you're new perhaps I could presume to give you some advice. You can find out masses of info by asking but first try the search function. There are dozens of past threads about fins, some of them with hundreds of posts. That's why you don't always get answers as people have already said so much about it. Also put your location on your personal data as it helps to know where people are when replying.

Anyway basically long freediving fins are much more efficient than short fins which are usually designed for SCUBA. Long fin blades come in different stiffnesses. Soft for surface work and stiff for deeper diving. Also soft for lower effort and stiff for Mr Muscle. Freediving fins also come in two part or one piece. Almost everyone recomends full foot pockets rather than open heel. You can wear socks but not boots with full foot pockets or go barefoot if you live somewhere warm. (See why it's important to know where you live - and dive.)

Good full foot pocket fins are Sporasubs H Dessault which have changable blades (2 part fins) or Cressi Gara 3000 LD (Long Distance - for surface swimming) which are one piece. Check out the Deeperblue shop.

Hope that's helped.

Dave

Thanks. That info helps me alot.I live in R.I. I have a shop close to me that sells cressi,I will try them on.I heard that long fins cause alot of splashing?

Hi RITOG,
I have Cressi gara 300 great fin but may be abit stiff for surface swimming but your muscles adapt after a bit they just take a bit of getting used to.

Cressi Pro Star fully moulded fin, excelent for underwater rugby, hocky and very nice to use in shallow water and finning about on the surface, why do i know?, i have them.:) :)

And they are also available in the DB store.

I use 'dolphin' fins from waterway, so does nearly everyone else in my club, they are great for strength training, snorkleing and learning a correct monofin technique without investing in an expensive monofin first:)

Personally I have owned,

Sporasub H. Desaults
Cressi Gara 2000HF
Had a pair of Cressi Gara 3000's but I they were stolen with my luggage from a train in Italy :(

For long fins. For shallow water I prefer the Cressi's they are even usable for SCUBA (though I got blisters swimming against the current with them, and they are difficult to do backing up manouvers)

For fast diving the Sporasub's are dramatically better than the Cressi's they have a much punchier kick and they feel like an even higher gear, but they tired me out doing surface swimming and cramped my foot. I found I would go under (-1m) just swim back to shore.

So I like my 12year old Mares Quatro pro's with loose heel for SCUBA
Cressi's for surface swimming
Sporasubs for deeper and faster (also they do come apart, which makes travel easier, though I was always worried that I was over stretching the plastic)

Hope that helps!

Just ordered some Omer Ice Fins.

Dave :)

PS why hasn't DB shop got them?

I hope you like them, I like mine so far. Even though they haven't seen real action yet :(.

Oh and my guess as to why DB Shop doesn't have them is because they are from OMER and OMER is a supporter of DB. :)

I agree with Groupermadness: to fish in shallow you don't really need long proper freediving fins (which however are necessary for your safety, and not only for your performance, when you dive deeper than -12mt).
I own and use Omer Millenniums and Rekords, but for shallow spearfishing I'm still okay with 8 years old short Cressi Freefrog. The Pro Stars are even better, because the blade is built ON the footpocket and not in front of it, so providing a longer blade than Freefrogs, but with the same overall length.

The correct fin for your application is the Mares Avanti Tre. These full foot fins were among the highest rated in Scubalab tests. I own them and can vouch for the general validity of the Scubalab opinion. They are relatively cheap and available from Leisurepro, among others.

my favorite all time shallow water 2-10m fins are the Cressi Garas. nice, soft, easy to swim with.

I've got some mileage on my ice fins - I find them much more comfortable than my Sporas - particularly on the surface. And better for manuevering around. I think the sporas have more power but the Ice fins are very smooth. They feel like they look :)

Yeah I love the look of them as well, I often find myself swimming upside down looking at my feet roflrofl.

I am also building my mileage on the ice fins :), its just too bad its all pool mileage rofl

I've had my Ice fins for a while now and love them. Softer than the Gara's I had before but plenty of thrust.

I too look back to watch them.....

At first I treated them like they were glass, now they've got a few scratches but these disappear once you get in the water as well.

One tip though, don't let a wave wash one out of your hand, it takes ages to find it again!

If you have clear water - it's fun to hold one out flat and let it go - they glide very steadily to the bottom - Kinda like flying paper airplanes.

I'm never letting go of one again mate! ;) Thinking of painting the inside of the footpockets to make them easier to find!
