Shark Nets - and why I hate them

Thought I'd start a fire about shark nets - you know those pesky things hanging about beaches ...

Some stats from the South African Sharks Board:

Sharks Board scientist Sheldon Dudley said about 1 300 sharks are caught in Kwazulu Natal shark nets every year. Only about 15 percent of these are released alive.

Up to 80 dolphins, including a number of rare humpback dolphins, also die in the nets on a yearly basis. About 70 turtles are caught, with only a third released alive, while roughly 300 rays are also netted. Fortunately, they have a much higher survival rate.

For interests sake, Kwazulu Natal is a province in South Africa, and covers roughly a third of our coastline. The rest of the coast is mostly net - free.
