Some statistics from the Natal Sharks Board in South Africa:
Sharks Board scientist Sheldon Dudley said about 1 300 sharks are caught in KZN shark nets every year. Only about 15 percent of these are released alive.
Up to 80 dolphins, including a number of rare humpback dolphins, also die in the nets on a yearly basis. About 70 turtles are caught, with only a third released alive, while roughly 300 rays are also netted. Fortunately, they have a much higher survival rate.
