Make you jealous man! Spending a month at Sea of Cortez, just finning up and down the coast. Little bit of freediving, catching some rays, chilling out. Trouble is the retailers of the shark shield cant seem to get one to me in time and my wife will be worried. Any ideas anyone?

Jealous? You're kidding, ......I live in a tropical paradise. My winter suit is a 2mm!!! :t

First, check out Ebay, especially in the U.S. and Australia.

Second, since you'll be there for a full month, see if one of the retailers will ship it as fast as they can to your hotel at your vacation destination.

Third, post to the beach bar section asking for anyone who is familiar with your vacation destination and the local shark situation. Some areas don't really have sharks (but Sea of Cortez has the "Hammers").

Jim

Thanks for that. One retailer has already made contact and it seems things might happen there. Ebay was no good worldwide. As for the Mexico hotel, I am linking up with MT on the beach and plan to fin up and down the coast with my new raft, sleeping bag & camping, spearfishing. If all else fails I will try to get one posted to there. Really this is Robinson Crusoe stuff...............dreams are made of it. Except this dream is my wifes nightmare and she is staying at home...........dreaming of hammerheads.

tell your wife not to worry

there are are lots of guys here that will take care of her if somthing happens to you

Hayden,

For what it's worth, I never saw a single shark when I dove down there a few years ago. Granted I was on scuba at the time and taking pictures- not spearing fish.

Please let us know about MT's operation. I would love to do a monofin course with them.

Thanks for your messages. Within 30 minutes of posting my first request, I had an email from Mike Fink of www.austinsdiving.com. He had one in stock and it is now on its way to me by UPS. I cannot recommend Mike enough for making it happen faster than the speed of light..... Having been let down by two other authorised dealers of the product and rapidly running out of time, I now have one extra element of protection. Now, I doubt it will stop a charging great white and maybe not any other big shark with its mouth open and looking for the first bite, but I expect it will turn away any shark that simply takes a sniff or gets too close as it cruises by. And I think that is the secret, let them get turned away before I see them and before they think they are hungry. I will let you know when I get back in a few weeks if I see it working, but just knowing its there is a great relief. I suppose though if I see a shark, I really should be thrilled for life. I expect to fin around 500 miles along the coast line and will no doubt pass along seal colonies, feeding grounds and other barren places. Apart from the Shark Shield, my raft has a Sharkcamo paint job on the underside of the hull, the pattern is supposed to be such that a shark already knows he doesnt eat that design. Of course a dive knife and speargun too, but if they become necessary, I expect to have a heart attack first.
Stay wet guys, I expect too.
Haydn

The odds of being attacked down in the sea of Cortez are minimum, if you find any sharks at all that would be hammerheads and some grays. Unless you are going blue water *for the deep blue is loaded with makos and blues- don[t waste your money and get yourself a nice speargun instead

I been there about 3 weeks ago. WHALES all over around! I can't say for sure what kind of whales, we were bussy seting a line for the first freediving session this year. Whater temp was around 18°C, viz on 5 to 7 m

I'm pretty sure Haydn is having a great time by now.
