Shark tooth spear with closed muzzle?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

I have one of these sexy spears:

Tahitian spear 6.5mm america OMER Accessories Guns United Kingdom Dive Scuba store .com

And want to try silent dynema wishbones, BUT my Omer Cayman has a closed muzzle.

The three sharkteeth are quite high, say 3mm from the shaft, but still clear the inner parts of the closed muzzle by at least the same 3 or 4mm.

Will it snag? Some clues BEFORE jumping in water and finding out most appreciated..

I could grind the teeth down to half their actual hight without problems and still have a good engagement area I believe.

i dont think so azapa, i believe these are mini sharkfins, like you have on the riffe euro shafts...i use them on my omer excalibur, which has a smaller muzzle then the cayman..so i think you should be fine
 
I am probably not the best person to ask about spear gun safety but if it was me - I would close one eye half shut the other & fire!
 
isnt that the same as my omer cayman hf???
if yes, then mine also has a closed muzzle and sharkfin shaft, and it doesnt snag. although mine has the flopper on top, i dont think that makes a difference though. who am i to give you advice though haha

Marwan: how high are the top of the "teeth" from the shaft on the spears you use without trouble?
 
foxy and pastor, you were almost right. Crunch on 4th shot. DON'T do it..

see damage, and post "open muzzle conversion with hacksaw blade and sandpaper" results.

I DON'T like Open muzzles BTW, stuff wiggles around too much in our rough oceans.

this is how locals handle this situation: with a little nail, copper in this case, heated and inserted into the muzzle. A wrap of line keeps the spear in place. The tension is provided with the bungee. I tried this over the weekend on a 5 hour dive and found it comfortable with no loss in accuracy, I think

The line DOES kink on that wrap, but the wear or breakability is probably no worse than the wear at the spear attachment point or crimps.

I have seen some guns with this idea somewhere.

Very positive comments, what else? That's exactly what I did on my Omer Master Competition 106. Apart from allowing sharkfin shafts (which I don't)and reducing to zero the drag of shooting line when passing throught the muzzle, the gain is a much better sight on the shaft itself for better aiming. Azapa you did the right thing no doubt (and it also looks well done)
 
Thanks Spago! I was a bit nervous as almost anything that needs fixing here is done with a nail, a little piece of wire and/or some sticky tape.... But in this case seems like it was a worthy use of Chilean creativity.
BTW: i also ground of the front sharktooth, the one closest to the point, as it was a pain, it's much easier to load now
 
It's almost like you can't tell the bridge on the muzzle was ever there? How'd you remove the broken pieces?

Hi there David!
In my case I used a sharp cutter for taking away the "body" of the bridge, then a file and sandpaper to finish.
Unilke Azapa, who inserted the pin from outside, I inserted a nail from Inside the band fitting (of course, I temporarily took away the band for doing so) , so that the head of the pin inside prevents it from slipping out, and the band prevents it from slipping in (I'd explain it better in italian than in english, but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say).

mine broke (read thread) the rest was hacksaw and file, still looks crude. I did the following to insert nail, very nerdily:
- unscrewed the band, inserted nail in hole and marked nail (to measure hole depth)
- transfered this measurement to the outside, (so as to see where I should STOP inserting nail, I didn't want to go through
- drilled a 2mm pilot hole to that depth (not going through)
- mushed up nail shaft (use brass, inox or copper nails) with side cutters
- heated nail in very hot on gas grill flame and inserted

I have no idea how long it will last as I have only used for one dive, but it feels very firm. The wrapping action of the line is pleasant and very fast.
