Guys, im sick to death of sanding down my rusty Rob Allen spear. I have an 80 carbon railgun with 120cm spear which suits me fine for UK water. Ive never lost a fish with my set up (single 19mm band, 6.6mm spear, single wrap).

What I am proposing to do is to replace my nasty rusty wishbone killing RA spear with a nice stainless one. Preferably with sharkfins and a double barb.

My current spear is quite heavy and packs some punch. And the barb never fails to open once ive speared a fish. I swapped to my xxv gold on Saturday and lost two bass out of 5 shot with this gun due to the barb not opening and the thin spear.

So my questions are these....

1. Have any of you made the swap to stainless from the standard steel ?
2. If so which make ?
3. most importantly will sharkfin tabs fit under my low profile closed muzzle (new type 2012)

Ive just ordered some bulk rubber and dyneema from "spearitco" and thought I'd try a stainless cable wishbone too. That way I dont have to make my rusty spear totally redundant. I can use it with the cable wishbone if needs be.

Mr X, thoughts please...

cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,

I've got a RA Caranx 120 with the closed muzzle you're describing and I feel your pain. I've used it a handful of time and after returning from a non-spearfishing trip overseas the shaft was covered in rust just by sitting there. I'm swapping between my daily-grind 90/95 Italian guns using a stainless shaft and the Caranx and never had an issue with the ss under normal use. Although the ss bends at the tip I always managed to get it straight again. I never shoot into caves but still wouldn't trust the stainless with bigger prey.
Unless you're planning to (involuntarily) convert your closed into an open muzzle I wouldn't go for a sharkfin shaft. It will definitely getting stuck in/grind through. If you need the increased strength of a sharkfin I would consider to cut the top bit off the muzzle just to make sure. The beauty of this model is that is a kind of semi-open muzzle to start with anyway…
Hope that helps.
