Hi everyone,
Im off to the apnea academy freediving instructors course on thursday. Just wondering the water is ok, is it best to drink bottled water???, is the food etc of a good standard.

What sort if inoculations are required. Any advice would be appreciated.

They advise agasint drinking the tap water there if you are a foriegner, as you need to have built up an immunity to certain impurities in the water. and in terms of innoculations I can't remember what I had to get done when I went, but I'm sure there are plenty of other people on here who will be able to tell you :)

Martin

Thanks for that Martin,
I guess there are good supplies of bottled water etc availiable????

any other advice

Steve

Don't drink the tapwater! It's no good at all. The same with everything else over there. You really have to watch what you're eating. I've been to several courses with Umberto in egypt and brought big groups of people to it. And everytime 8 out of 10 people got really really sick during the week because of foodpoisining or something else, that said, not everybody was following the advise not to eat the cold fresh melon and other fruits. Watch the botteled water, so you can see that it's still sealed when they bring it to your table or when you buy it.

For sure bring some medication for possible stomach problems!

Sharm is a good place to dive, but the food.... no thanks

Travellers should get Hepatitis B innoculations at the least. Always drink bottled water, and be careful where you buy it, as it's quite easy to reseal the empties (don't buy off street vendors anywhere). Any food that's fresh/uncooked and potentially washed in water is out, as is ice in your drink.
Bring a strong anti-diuretic as you will most likely get the runs at some point.
Peace,
Erik Y.

Thanks for the advice guys, will watch the water, and be careful of what you eat. Just need the inoculations now

I had some advice from a regular visitor to Egypt about medication for the ubiquitous Gyppy tummy, if you do get it, go to a local chemist and ask them for something, it is much beter than anything you can take with you.
Also wash your hands after handling money, apparently thats a great spreader of various germy things. A small bottle of anti bacterial handwash should do the trick.

another reason a lot of people get sick in Egypt is dehydration - drink loads of bottled water, clean your teeth with bottled water. The food out there is nice - lots of good rice, fish, salads and healthy stuff.

Bit late in the day for inoculations but I would go with Hep B and tetanus at least.

Mind you, having seen the schedule for the AA Instructor course, I think your biggest problem is going to be getting exhausted! So make sure you get plenty of sleep!!

good luck, let is know how it goes
