Looking for any tips on resharpening speartips, I have been using a stone for years which works ok but is very time consuming any info would be appreciated thx.

I would go with the file. Low tech and portable. The grinder may mess up the metal's anti-rust protection if it is heated too much. Of course, it takes some practice to get it right.

Fair enough, it is portable and a super solution for on-the-go fixes, but it is much much harder to file it down to be super sharp by hand.

More important than rust protection is temper. The points ability to hold an edge. Overheating while grinding can anneal the steel (break temper). This means you will actually need to sharpen more often. You want tempered steel to hold an edge.

Better than a bench grinder, is a low speed grinder, mine is made by Delta Tools with a flat wheel, and a vertical grinding wheel. The low motor speed prevents heat build up. With low speed you can quench with water without breaking temper.

For tri-tip:


For pencil tip, I use a bench grinder and spin the shaft in my fingers. Grind in short increments while spinning. This is my preferred method.
