I want to make my own shock cord to replace the one that came stock with my gun. I found a few links to videos that described various methods, but this one seemed the easiest

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO3CvH1gBbs]DIY Muzzle bungie - YouTube[/ame]

I want to get opinions on it's design, and more importantly get input from experienced spearos on possible alternatives. I am not hunting large fish, the largest likely to be ling cod.

Yes that bungee cord method is fine, I actually use the same cord but just use a 6'' length attached directly to the line.
Never had it break as yet but, I dont hunt big fish either.

You may find it very beneficial to add a snap swivel or some type of release which will allow the shooting line to be easily and quickly disconnected from the gun. This is important if you should shoot a fish and get full penetration resulting in the fish being strung on the line.

When this happens, (and the fish is lively) they can twist and turn and make a tangled mess that is much easier to deal with, if you can disconnect. This is a what we utilize:

I've used Rob Allen big game bungees, rather like Makos above, and have a similar one by Omer on my second speargun (Omer XXV 90) currently.

They are very good and very strong - and well suited to large/powerful spearguns and big game fish. However, I prefer lighter alternatives on my Omer XXV spearguns as they are very lightweight spearguns. For example, the much lighter weight (and somewhat cheaper) Beuchat bungee, which is similar in design to the RA/Mako but is much slimmer, lighterweight & much weaker (esp. the swivel clip) and it does not last as long. But it is plenty strong enough for most British fish.

I've also used plain bungee directly to the spearline as Foxfish describes without problem too. Best to use thicker bungee though, I think (or longer lengths if using thinner bungee - but it looses its elasticity sooner). Currently on my main speargun (Omer XXV 75) I'm using one of those simple black rubber "dog bones" by Omer, which I wrap 2 or 3mm black Omer braid around, pretty much as shown in the video above. I like this so far, quite simple, light and compact - no swivel clip, I use a sheet-bend to tie it to the loop in the end of the spearline. Suits the small, superlight speargun.

The Omer bungees above are available from apnea.co.uk. The Beuchat too probably & can also be found at Scubaland.fr (become a member free & get discount).

Hey tihson, sorry I didn't get ahold of you this week for diving - I've been I have a couple extra ones though, one rob allen clip style, and one SA style with spectra if you need it, but I'm sure making your own would be fun!

Happy thanks giving, hopefully I can find some time this week to hit the breakwater again!
