Hi new friends!

So, I'm new to spear fishing, particularly with a gun. I have done some casual hand-spear fishing over the last couple years, and really enjoyed it. I acquired this gun for free last year and am only just about to take it out. I have had a friend set it up with the proper rigging and gear, but I have one problem. The little lever (term?) that the shooting line loops around seems to prevent the spear from releasing. If the lever has any tension on it from the line and is pulled forward at all, the spear will not release. I have not tried it in the water only using gravity to pull the spear, and trying to manually pull the spear out after pulling the trigger. The spear releases fine when the shooting line is not wrapped.

Also, I can't seem to find much information on this gun. It is an Undersee (Bondi) Hunter. It appears to be on the older side. So, any information that you can give me would be fantastic.

Cheers.

Personally, I would try stripping down the trigger mechanism to see if there is anything wrong there and give it a clean out at the same time. Sometimes sand/grit can get into trigger mechs. & stop them from working. You could try just flushing it through with clean water first, to try and dislodge/dissolve and grit/salt but I expect you need to disassemble it, carefully.

On having a look inside, it appears that the shooting line release lever is pushing on the bar that locks the spear into place and pushing it off center. Any idea why that would be?

The mono is too tight & the line release is not allowing the sear to drop & release the spear. It will still work OK underwater when the rubber is loaded. Still, I'd take it to someone who can rig it correctly. If it was mine I'd also ditch the line slide & follower on the spear & swage the mono straight onto a hole in the spear & only use a single loop of mono instead of two, for ease of reloading.

Terrible handles. A lot of old comp divers down here who used this handle as the basis for their guns when it was one of a few ( the most reliable though) available, have a permanently deformed second finger from where it rubbed on the trigger guard. A simple fix was to cut the guard off & replace it with some flat stainless, which was more comfortable & gave more room on the grip for fingers.

For what its worth, with all four of my Wong guns, the line release won't allow me to pull the shaft out by hand if its under tension from the shooting line, but it releases just fine when I shoot it. That is normal, and doesn't need to be fixed.

Bingo! That was the issue. Thank you!
