Hi all,
Could anyone help me with the following issue: I have been having recurring issues with my sinuses when freediving. It happens with greater frequency and no particular reason I can point to. I get it I would say once every four or five diving sessions, sharp pain above my eyebrows. When it is really bad, I cant go past 2 meters. Sometomes I can just manage by going down extremely slowly for the firt 5 metres and then it abates when I get deeper. I usually dive with a mask and my usual depth is between say 15 and 35m (CWT or FI). I should mention also that I equalize my ears extremely slowly (descent speed less then 0.5m/sec), and I do equalize hands free although equalizing vasalva does not change the sinus issue
The sinus problem seems to have no correlation with having a cold or being particularly congested, and I do cut out dairies and other mucus producing foods in the days preceeding freediving.
Here is where it gets interesting: on my last session, I decided to try feet first (FI) with the mask still on and still had pain around the 3-5m depth
I then remove the mask, put on a nose clip, and went straight down to 35m! I was able to repeat that dive several times without the mask but the minute I put the mask on, the sinus issue came back (head up or down)
So obvious conclusion seemes to be that something is happening when I wear the mask.
Is the air being sucked out of my mask and into the nose and sinuses creating sinus pressure?
Anyone has an idea or has had similar experience?
Would much appreciate help with this frustrating issue :)
Many thanks

Samir

I find that the things that stop me from being able to equalize are:

1. congestion
2. dehydration
3. sleep deprivation

Even if I have no congestion whatsoever, 2 or 3 alone is enough to stop me from going down.

Hope this helps :)

No clue about the mask thing though. Maybe the mask pressing against your sinuses (making them narrower) has something to do with it?
