Slip tip recommendations?

Yesterday I shot a big fish (either amber jack or roosterfish, hard to tell) and i must have shot through the gill plate because it cut the dacron line I had on my slip tip. So I lost the fish and my tip.
So, when I replace the tip thing, do you think that 300 lbs mono would work ok? Or should I bump it up to a light steel cable? I'd prefer to use mono, but I don't know if a fish would be able to take that out as well.

to be honest ive never heard/see anythign other than light steel cable. its pretty much the tried and true method over here.

Monofilament, although i know can be strong, just would make me uneasy.

Do you ever have any problems with the cable "meathooking"? Like when little bits of metal break and stick out, hooking your fingers.

If you want to use SS cable and are concerned about getting one of those lovely frayed wires under a fingernail you should opt for the coated SS.

ive got the ss wire with a plastic casing like joel said, its perfect and streamlined to.

we just have ours crimped under the jacket so that the ends are not exposed.

Well, I couldn't get ahold of any good steel cable, so I just used 150 lbs mono instead. It works fine, but I wouldn't trust it for more than one trip. especially in reef settings where there are rocks and stuff to snag. So I'll keep looking for some good steel cable.
Is the coated stuff used for fishing as leaders? Cause if it is I bet I could find it locally. They do a lot of fishing here.

Please don't try and shoot a big fish with a mono-rigged slip-tip! There is a reason that no commercially available slip-tip uses mono. The two tried and true options are spectra and stainless cable because they have exceptional abrasion resistance. Mono is weakened tremendously after just one knick. Some slip-tips are designed specifically for spectra or stainless and some can use both. If you want to make sure that next bruiser makes it in the boat, check out slip-tips from Mori, Plamen Kolev, Steve Alexanders, Bill Kitto, and Aimrite. These tips use 1100# Spectra and/or 3/32 stainless cable.

i actually just realised that you probably use a gun so my solution might not really work best. Basically, here is the setup we use. The pic is taken from the henley site, so if you can find these tips somewhere then good to go (if you can attach them). we end up just getting parts and doing it ourselves.
