Hello,

I'm a seventeen year old teenager from the Netherlands, and I interested in freediving as doing additional to powerlifting/bodybuilding. Now I believe the two sports can be perfectly combined, as it is my goal to keep my body strong, while maintaining a low fat-percentage, and thus prevents me from taking any surplus mass with me while diving.

But, my experience with freediving is pretty limited: At a holiday in Sharm El Sheik I managed to dive till 25 meters, but that was without a buddy, or any training, except for just 'diving' as long as I could during the holiday.

What I'm hoping to find on this forum? A place to find some good information about how to train correctly, since my experience with powerlifting is that things as 'just holding your breath for as long as possibly' probably isn't the best way to train your freediving skills.
Btw: I've found a buddy who's willing to train with me: my mom, who's a pretty experienced scuba diver.

Hello and welcome on DB... 25 meters is a good depth!!! You will find all answers for your questions... simply free diving rely on what are your limits and how can you improve them by training, so to know your limits in a safe way you have to get a beginner course, and dive with experienced freediving buddy... All best on your venture

And there are at least two freedive clubs in the Netherlands, where you can come to train.

And someone eager for a buddy in the overijssel/drenthe area....:D Am I lucky this time?

Hi Seanl94,

Welcome to DB.

I live in the south, just about in the triangle of Den Bosch - Tilburg and Eindhoven in a little village called Haaren.

I usually train in Oisterwijk, on Tuesday and thursday evening, and on Sunday from 12:00 - 14:00 during recreational hours.

I'll be happy to to give you and your mom an introduction and teach you the starting principles and safety, so you both can explore your minds and bodies in a safe way.

If you happen to live a bit further away, maybe I can arrange coming over, but I need to consider my agenda and the public transport system.

BTW 25m is really very deep when you don't know what you're doing, but I guess when the water is nice and clear going deeper is very tempting as well!
Give me a PM and I can give you my contact information and we can meet up.

Have fun reading and searching this great forum!

Yaffle: Unfortunately I live in Zuid-Limburg, so it's a bit far, but at the end of june I'll spend a week in Bergumermeer with some friends. If I have done a safety course and have good equipment by then, you're always free to hop by and do some dives. I'll probably learn a lot from you too.

And Kars: It sure sounds tempting. I'll ask if she's interested, but I assume she is, since she as well knows the risks of BO during freediving. You'll probably have a PM in the very near future.

Btw, you can just call me Sean ;)

Hi Sean,

It's probably best if you do a course with a qualified instructor, as it will save you from many beginner/self-taught mistakes. The most experienced and active in the Netherlands right now is Nanja van den Broek , i'd suggest getting in touch with her. She's in Haarlem, which i realize is far away, but she's well worth the trip, or might be able to point you in the way of a good Belgian instructor.

Enjoy the blue,

Daan
