Snorkeling in Hong Kong: Hoi Ha Wan

Beautiful video! My one and only time in Hong Kong was in 2000, when I saw the wonderful beaches there. I have many happy memories of my visit, although I never snorkelled there to my great regret.

Did you know that snorkelling equipment was manufactured in Hong Kong over half-a-century ago? Here is an article entitled "Product of the Month" published in the September 1955 issue of the Hong Kong Commerce and Industry Department Trade Bulletin:

The photograph shows spearfishing goggles, diving masks, swimming fins and breathing tubes made by the Wah Tai Rubber Company in Kowloon in the mid-1950s. The article can also be viewed online at Hong Kong Memory.

Last but not least on the best beaches for snorkeling in Hong Kong has to be around the Hoi Ha Marine Park. The park is known for its pristine and crystal clear waters which make it up for one of the best experiences while snorkeling. You can dive deep into it to experience the beauty of the vibrant coral reefs along with the beauty of marine life.

Further to my message almost a year ago about the underwater swimming equipment manufactured by Wah Tai Rubber Company in Kowloon in the mid-1950s, here is a curious observation about the adjustable open-heel snorkelling fins in the Hong Kong company's range:
RubberFins.jpg
If you look closely at the label embossed on the the top of the foot pockets, you will see the word "Walter".

The image below shows one of these fins alongside another fin marketed by Healthways in the USA during the 1950s:

Note the resemblance? The Healthways version is on the left, the Walter version on the right. Both have the product name "Web Feet". A coincidence? Can you spot the small difference in appearance between them other than the colour and the writing on the foot pockets?
