At first, I would have poohed-poohed the idea of diving in Melbourne as the first week I was there the ocean was rough, brown, turbid, and freezing.

I went up to Queensland to the Whitsunday islands to discover that it was the wrong season for visibility, and the best we had was about 2 metres.

We returned to Melbourne after 5 days, and the weather was glorious, the sea calm and BLUE. We went to Queenscliff Dive Centre in Melbourne, and hooked up with a dive boat and went to Pope's Eye.

Pope's Eye is surrounded by kelp and has some of the most beautiful filefish I have ever seen.

After the scuba dive, they took us to a seal station in the middle of Port Phillip Bay.

Here are the pics :D It was fantastic, to say the least.

5mm wetsuit plus hood were required :)

Ha Popes Eye and The Seals at Chinamans Hut.
Wow this is that last place I thought I'd see that lol.
I live in Melbourne and have both scuba and freedived it a few times.
Good bit of fun. I'm diving it in a few weeks I think.

Glad you had fun. Melbourne has brilliant dives. Make sure you get on a wreck while your down here.

I highly recommend, the J4 Sub (or 27m sub they sometimes call it), the Coogee or the Eliza Ramsdom if you can get on it.

Or if you want some reef. The North wall corner is a must or the cathedral.

Vis is pretty good at the moment so I'd get in while you can.
