My university has a scuba team, I'v known the guys for a few years now, and I even did a bit of pool training with them. I saw them the other day they told me they where going to go to, to this 60m quarry somewhere in North Wales. Now I am not crazy enough to think that I can do 60m, but I have a static of around 3m 30s, and I can do 20m pretty easy, so I am hoping to do 30m on the quarry.

So what sort of training should I do to get me fast back onto my optimum? Considering that when I go back to Greece to the island, I need usually a few days to start diving, since I haven't been all year long.

I will do a lot of static on my bed or in the pool, and try to see how far I can go in the pool, but other than that I have no idea what to do.

Any help muchos appreciated!

What Uni is that Pyro? Not UWB I hope rofl
The quarry will be the Dorethea up in Nantlle. Alun and his mates are there every week I believe, might be worth hooking up with then or at least dropping him a pm :)

Be careful up there - go with Alun if you can as he is the real freedive expert at Dorothea

If you are not organising it with Alun and would can make it down south, we dive regularly in a quarry in South Wales - Chepstow

Details are on www.saltfreedivers.com

More freedivers and safety scuba divers (Angels) always welcome

Sam

Bradford :p

I am not too sure about the name...they did tell me, in a very serious manner, that two divers have drowned there though! I'll give them a call to see where they are going and when and get back to you guys. :D

edit: MY GOD! That place looks beautyfull! And the water looks so clear! I always thought quarrys would have muddy watter and stuff, this is ace!

How to get ready? Best idea is arrange for a (several) experianced freediving buddy(s). Alone or with bubble blowers is not the safest thing in the world. Hmm, maybe I should rephrase that. Diving in a quarry you've never been in before, to significant depth you've never done before, either alone or with people who are focused on scuba (close to the same thing) is stupid, quite possibly terminally stupid. Don't do it.

I'll assume you found some freedivers. If you haven't done much more than 20 meters, you will probably find it starts feeling pretty strange and gets hard to clear as you near residual volume, somewhere around 25-30 m. Study up (thoroughly) on negative dives in the deep end of the pool. Be careful, you can hurt yourself doing this, but simulating 30 m + for equalization and feelings of preasure is not difficult. I would do some long dynamics (with a buddy). 30 meters is a lot farther from the surface than you are used to and dynamic practice will help. Also, practising diaphram stretches will help greatly on equalization. CO2 tolerance tables are a good idea. Use the search function to study up on where to be neutral and where to stop swimming and start falling, streamlining, etc.

Good luck and have fun. I would love to dive with Alun or the Saltfree folks.

What's wrong with UWB...?

It's been a long time since I've been to Dorothea, for scuba that is. I usually stay along the shelf bit to train newbie scubies.

Do people still do their business behind the trees?:t

I started diving probably around 10yrs old, maybe younger, I was at an island in Greece every summer for three months, so simply swimming wouldn't cut it. I started diving with my friends, but they where more interested in cliff jumping or the attractions on the beach, hehe, so I never really had a buddy. On the other hand I never really push myself to the limits when I dive, but I guess it's still pretty irresponcible.

I haven't found any freedivers yet, but I am hoping that I will once I get there, my plan is to start with some dynamic and then slowly get to 20m, then see how I feel down there. I am not going to grab a rock and go as far down as I can on my very first dive, but then again with my static time 30m should be ok...?

I found the apnoe trainer here, and a few tables as well, they do seem helpfull and it's the exact same thing we did in a freediving course a couple of years ago.
