After making the first gun was exciting and i am thinking now to make others.I bought Burma Teak wood blank (15 cmx 6 cm x 300 cm) and cut it into three pieces:

1- Two pieces were 15cm x 6 cm x 85 cm.This will make 4 guns as i hope each will be 85 or 90 adding the length of the Handle since i am going to use ready handle which i will order from Mako. Instead of making track for the shaft i am thinking of ordering rail from Mako also and use epoxy and screw them to the gun ( I want advice on that in case it is not recommended to do so)

2- One piece 15 cm x 6 cm x 135 cm. Which will be Water gun for boat dives where i will make them enclosed track and i will order the parts from Neptonics as i hope.

What will be the recommended wood blank for each size gun and is there like standard table for size of the fun and the thickness of the wood? I need to know that because i want to make a T Shape Lamination and need to know what cut it should be...

More question will be on the way going...

Thanks in Advance for all you support...

I am impressed with you attempting a gun build up! Make sure we get to see pictures as the project progresses! Good luck and watch out for power tools.

thnx for your encouraging words hope things will go better this time, and hope someone will be answering me soon this year LOLz...

All wat i have now is the wood waiting some replies to decide how to cut them...

I dont think there is any formula, you need to decide on the finished shape & size of your guns. T laminate best suits the American square design, perhaps make a one piece soft wood gun so you can experiment with & then copy.
You should use at least three lams but the more the prettier the gun!
if you are building a basic square design then divide the finishes size by three but if you are building a tapered euro sty the use thinner lams & more of them.

thnx a lot FoxFish but the reason i wanted to know the limitation in wood thickness is that i do not was my gun to be bulky and on the other hand not to break the wood from first rubber loading. for the 85 cm gun this will not be much risky as it is for the bigger ones 130 cm If i will make it with 5cm x 5 cm square then machine it is it going to be enough? or shall i make it from thicker profile?

Thanks a again for you valuable info...

I am not sure if 50mm x 50mm would be strong enough for a 130 but it would be ok for a
90.
i still dont understand what shape you plan to make the 130?

The 130 I am building has a finished size of 30x30mm at the handle & 30x75 at the muzzle end but it is reinforced with carbon.
I think you need some bulk for a big gun to reduce recoil.

Actually i like the Shape of the American guns Square shaped going thinner at the muzzle, but i will see i may try to make something different like the eye shape to reduce the profile, and make it easier to move under water...

OK well unfortunately I dont know the finished size of that type of gun but lets see if we can find out....

How many, and what size, bands do you intend to use? 130cm guns come in many styles. It could be long and thin, if you intend only 2 bands, or much heavier if you intend a more powerful gun with 3, 4, or more bands.

If 2 bands will be enough to shoot enough range would go for 2 bands but wat will be the shaft size and wat will be the range for 2 and 4 bands?

Thnx for ur help in advance...

I am going to use 3 bands... Also is it ok if the cross section of the gun will be 9cm x 5 cm? or it will be bulky? Whats the best cross section please?

This is a rough drawing i made on autocad showing top and side view of the design in my mind... plz any advice?

I was hoping someone with a bit more experience would chime in, as I have no experience hunting blue water.

9cm by 5cm is about 3.5" by 2". That seems a little bigger than I would use for three 5/8" bands. But if you think that you will be taking longer shots, the extra mass will help with recoil management and accuracy.

Did you say if it was rear handle or mid handle?

I am thinking to make it rear bcoz as i was told mid handle can not aim working by swinging the gun which i do not think will work with me correct me if i am wrong bcoz i like the shape of mid handle and i think it will be easier to use under water...

Thnx for the help u r giving and even if no one will be giving clear answer for me i will do it and learn :D most important to b safe other things let it get messy :D

I still think the best way would be to build a mock up gun from some soft wood.
we just need an American blue water hunter to give you the basic dimensions of their own gun?

Hi Salethfish, most my time is in the blue, but I need some back round.

1. What blue water fish are your target?
2. How big are you Ht and wt?
3. What is the longest gun you now use?
4.Measure the from the web between your thumb and index finger to your biscep when at 90 degrees.

Sorry I didn't post to you sooner. kid..karate..baseball..preseason prep.
Back after work.
Cheers, Don Paul

Hello Don Paul and thanx for your input... The answer of your questions are as follow:

1- Maximum will be king fish like 20 -30 Kgs this is if i will be lucky and catch something like this...

2- I am 174 cm high and 105 Kgs i.e fit as puffer fish :D

3- I am using 125 cm gun maximum rear handle

4- I tried to figure out what you meant but is it like in the picture the distance between the thumb and the biceps but in 90 not like the pic exactly? By the way thats not my arm!!!
Arm_flex_supinate.jpg

5- I never shoot mid handle i heard it shoot by winging the gun on the target is that right?

After all thanks i know everyone busy but u know when u r excited to do something :D

OK, got it.

Since you already shoot a mid sized rear handle, I would stay with this layout. When you say ''King fish'' I believe you are talking King Mackerel and not Yellowtail.King mackerel have soft flesh and can be easily torn off without a good holding shot.As you are good sized, strong launch platform you will not have to worry as much about recoil into the hand and arm.
The hand/ bicep measurement is so you will not build a gun with too long a distance behind the handle.

If you would be happy with a 7 to 7.5 shaft, rear handle in the 150 cm range we can go forward with style and shape. ..... back later friend after work.
Cheers, Don Paul
