I live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I am basically brand new to spearfishing and need some advice. I have a boat based in Kaneohe and have tried doing some three-prong fishing but i have gotten frustrated when i see a bigger fish that just stays out of range of the 3-prong. The water's about 10-25 feet deep and mostly reef. My questions are:

I've been looking for a speargun thats pretty good but won't break the bank. I'm basically looking at the OMER Excalibur 2000 and the Sporasub Black Viper. Which do you think is better or do you have any other suggestions?

What size gun should i get and what would be the range on it?

I have a pair of generic fins that are made of basic plastic about a foot long. Would it make a big difference to upgrade to some longer more advanced fins?

Does anyone know any other good dive spots on Oahu?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

My buddy has a Omer 2000, it's ok but not great, I would go for the Black Viper, and hook it up with some 18mm or 20mm rubber bands.

For size get a 90 or 100cm gun. Or bigger if you can reach and load the rubbers. I have shot alot of fish with a 90cm gun on a distance of 4 metres.

Bigger fins makes a great difference, get some Cressi Gara 2000 or Sporasub Dessault. They are cheap and pretty good.
