It seems that after a long days diving (or three!) my diaphragm or something seems to get a little sore. The pain is near the solar plexus area and is sometimes just under the lower ribs. But only on one side or the other...Or in the middle like it is today. I can only feel it when I put pressure there or lay down with my front side (chest and belly) facing down.

After a day or two it seems to dissipate or go away. Do you think this is lung squeeze? Or am I just sore from holding my breath all day long? I usually only go down a max of about 30 feet lately. I would'nt think that would cause any lung squeeze.

Does anyone else get this? I freedive/spear sometimes 4 days a week!!! And up to 9 hours at a time... With a few short breaks of course...Besides my breath-ups.

I don't want to go to the doctor about it...The pain is bearable and does go away after a day or two. Thanks for any replies.

I could be all off, but my first thought was buoyancy & weight, are you weighted optimally for your usual depth? You may be using some muscles that you probably rarely use on land, and you're using them a lot. That it moves around might show that you alternate muscles based on soreness.

How long have you been diving 4 days a week, 5-9 hrs a day? If a long time, then my statement is probably not right.

Sounds a bit like the lower back pain some people get due to weightbelts only on the other side. A vest might be the solution or some other redistribution of weight like ankle and wrist weights etc.

I'm gonna get a vest sooner or later...It seems I am weighted a bit heavy for the usual 20 to 30 foot depth when spearfishing. But it is nice to just drop in after only finning down about 10 feet.

I recently took 2 pounds off my weight belt...Since I have lost about 40 pounds in the last 6 months! :t That extra 2 pounds was making breath-ups less relaxing. Now I'm good with about twelve pounds - & I could go a little less I think.

I want to lose 30 more! Yeah....I WAS a fat ass! Thanks to my new found love of freediving/spearfishing I am losing the weight and eating right. There are NO SUCH THINGS AS DIETS....It is a lifestyle change...It's THE ONLY way to lose weight & keep it off in my opinion.

I'm no longer sore but I will be diving ALL day tomorrow...See the "Wisconsin freediver's & spearo's" page and click on oct.13 - We Wisconsin freshwater guys are a pretty active bunch...I love it! I have'nt gotten out in a week! So I'm over due for a good long day of spearfishing/freediving!

Thanks guys...Will get me a vest when money permits it! I personally think it may be from possibly overfilling my lungs all day long with super deep inhalations before a dive. But yes...The weights DO make my back hurt also!

Dan,

We normally try to be weighted neutral at a depth of about 33'- not floating and not sinking. If I am diving shallower than that, say 20', then I will weight myself to be neutral at half that depth- say 10'.

If you noticed my belt last week I have a bunch of small weights, all around 2 pounds each, and I take them on and off all the time as I move into different depths throughout the day- they get tied off to the float. This is done for safety's sake as well as ease on my lower back. Nick has those really nice weights, only 1 pound each, that I would love to have- maybe for my birthday. ;)

Insead of shelling out over $100 for a vest I would spend a lot less and invest in some, much, smaller weights than what your using now. If you get a decent rubber belt, like this Marsellaise belt IMERSION Belts Accessories United States Of America Dive Scuba store .com , you'll be able to switch weights around with, relative, ease. Since you have a dive kayak you can just toss them in there when they are not on your belt.

I agree - small weights are the way to go - I use a couple of 3s and some twos and that works pretty well for me. I think Omer is coming out with some clip on weights that look pretty cool.

Those new OMER weights look a lot like the old Sporasub weights that could be removed/replaced easily. From what I remember they were quite pricey.

One time I saw this movie and this guy had like a sore diaphragm or something but he was like, 'okay' and then this monster thing like busted out of him and ran away and grew big and killed everybody except this lady and she froze it and gassed it but finally she blew it out of her spaceship by opening the airlock and it like grabbed the ionic drive and she turned it on and then later she killed it's mom with a forklift.
Man that was scarey!

I don't ike to pay much for weights either - but it's worth it if it keeps monsters from exploding out of your chest!

Thanks Jon...Whats the matter? You don't like my 6 pound klunkers?!rofl

I WILL get a better weight belt one of these days and some decent weights. I do like the Idea of a vest though...Maybe for MY birthday;) as my back does get pretty sore some days.

By next fall I should be set with all of the GOOD stuff...Right now I'm trying to lose about 30 more pounds (of fat)...I don't want to get my "open cell" until then...Then the cost of it - and it's fit will motivate me to even more to keep in shape! :t

Maybe my back wont hurt as much then either!

Thanks for the help everyone...

BTW...Those monsters....They are in my Wife's belly! :inlove Now she's saying the doc thinks there may be 3 in there and so does she!!!!!!! We'll find out tomorrow...She's getting a more concise ultrasound done! WHAT THE HECK MAN! THIS IS CRAZY!

I WILL NOW BE ACCEPTING ANY AND ALL DONATIONS FOR FREEDIVING GEAR! Oh...AND DIAPERS!

Anyone have a school bus for sale too!!!! :)

9 hour dives! I don't even work that long! Perhaps you should shorten dive times till you get used to things?
