Hi all,

Im very new to spearfishing and i have to say i am loving it!
I have just started using a weight belt, and i have ended up with a sore lower back for a few days each time. im fairly fit and not overweight with no history of back issues

So my questions are:
Is this normal and will i get used to it as i do it more?
Im i possibly doing something wrong?
Is there some excises i can do specifically for this?

Any advice would be great!

I guess the first thing is to make sure your weight belt is being worn correctly. You want it to be firm and the way I was shown was to put it on as you bend over, this helps the weight to sit on your back as you tighten the belt removing that pull the weight places on the belt as you stand up. Ideally your weights will not move at all when worn correctly.
You could also make sure you're simply not carrying too much weight.

thanks, i have had a hard time keeping the belt on my back, it slips around to the front a bit. ill have to try what you suggested to keep it firm. thanks mate !

Swimming a long time with a few Kilos on your lower back will take some time getting used to... I've got the same problem as you even after a few years. To solve that I have to do some long stretches after diving to release the muscles in the lower back, otherwise they tend to tense up and that's painful.

There are a few:

And some...

It would be great if this weather found somewhere else to be. I've only been out twice since I got my gear and have only shot one fish.

Thanks for the advise on stretching I didn't do this after my last dive and I was out there for two hr playing so that would explain my pain.

Use a neoprene belt to start with as this will stop all movement & sliding of the belt.
Most back pain while spearfishing comes from surface swimming or hunting while looking forward as this causes arching of the spine due to acute neck angle.
The answer is to sink your legs & lower body so the looking forward becomes far more comfortable.

Like sayed before - start using rubber/neoprene belt.
And start using weight vest. That solved my back problems.
50% to belt and 50% to vest. Its most important when u use over 5mm suit. I need over 10kg with my 8mm suit, so there is no way that i put all weights to belt, it will broke my back

thanks, i have had a hard time keeping the belt on my back, it slips around to the front a bit. !

I don't quite get this. Have can the belt slip to the front? A belt goes all around...

Do you mean, that the weight is in your back, and the weight slips to the front? Then you just need another arrangement of weight distribution...

Its just classic problem with nylon belt

Yes baiyoke, i mean the weight slips to the front.

I have only dived with one small weight on atm, as im just starting and still working everything out. The water is warm here so i dont have a wet suit, just a rashie. one seems to keep me down ok, was going to try two on my next dive.

thanks
