Happy new year all.
Looking forward to getting in the water soon. Got a 7mm suit from Anthony at Venture sports so there is no excuse.
I think I will spend most of January losing the Christmas weight before I venture back in.
Also got a sit on top for Christmas so I am looking forward to trying that out soon.

what sot did you go for north? im still using my xt but ive got my eye on the prowler 15 for the summer
 
Hi Scott,
Got a Bic 2 man. Hope to get it rigged up soon and give it a try in the water.
Felt I needed to have SOT for my local water. The currents can be quite strong and it means if I am not out on the boat with Ollie or Tribs I can still get out to some of my favourite spots safely.
I may well be picking your brains for a bit of advice.
Are you still getting in the water at the moment?

Ive not been in over Christmas mate I have a 1 month old keeping me too busy

Looking forward so seeing the yak kitted out and ready to go. Are you planning to install a fish finder?

Scott, no plans for a fishfinder yet, but it may follow later. I have looked through the threads about rigging a yak and found them really useful.
Will keep you informed of progress.
Congratulations on the baby. Hope you're getting enough sleep.
 
Brett there is no way in hell we having another baby this one takes up far too much of my time as it is rofl North, anything over 3 1/2 hours of sleep in my house is a miracle :crutch


So who's going for a winter cod this year?
 

Hi north 1, I have been using kayaks for spearing from for a couple of years now and find them great ,I have had a Tarpon 120 for a year now and find it superb,I have done no rigging out of any kind ,just a big net sack to keep all my gear in ,and fish,crabs etc however keep my weight belt separate but tied to yak (it is very easy to lose stuff overboard esp if getting in and out on the water ,as in not landing ashore first ,I do not use an anchor but a length of thin rope to tie it to some kelp or rocks , sometimes i swim with it a bit like a float,more than a gentle breeze can cause it to drift faster than i can swim and fin ,so take care ,I also take food drink etc and go out all day,sometimes take diving gear with me and change when I get to what I feel is a good spot,it can get very hot paddling in a wetsuit ,and give you sore armpits (wetsuit rub), never met another spearo in a yak ,but I usually go to remote places ,South Hams in particular ,have fun and may see you around !
 
Thanks Mirror. That seems interesting stuff. I will be using it around East Devon, but my better half wants to take it out around the Salcombe, Dartmouth area.
I was thinking of getting a cargo net to keep things secure. I will need an anchor around this area as the tide runs quite strong.

Thanks Scott. I was thinking of an anchor like this, but possibly a bit heavier. If you think a lighter one is ok then that seems good to me. I should be able to pick one up locally. Don't think I will be getting out on the water for a while though.

Has anyone been getting in or are thinking of going in? I haven't dived in a while now as been doing a fair amount of surfing but I'm getting the itch for a dive!
 
Getting changed into my wetsuit in a car park in mid January is not something i normaly do. Well today the weather was to good not to give it ago. My last time in was mid October. My suit seems to have got smaller since then!!
It was 1 hour before low tide. The sea had that blue look about and the sun was shinning. The viz was about 5m but the low winter sun give it that first light look. It wasnt cold for the time of year. I didnt have my D3 with me so i cant tell you a temp. Plenty of kelp around still. I have dived this area in December before and its been bare of kelp.
Each dive i felt lucky but didnt see anything,not even small wrasse or pollack but my mojo was buzzing so i knew it was just a matter of time. Then there he was in a kelp covered gully,i was side on to him and lined him up. I stoned him with a good head shot,others bolted from the gully at the same time. A great start to the season with a January shore dived bass of 4lb5oz.

Awesome Nick!!!! Good fish to start the season off. Are you putting it in the Fish of Winter?
