South Devon Report 2012

Shiny1, great reports! Very jealous as always! I got in at my usual spot yesterday, lots of smaller fish about and high tide viz 5-6m, then it went very milky as the tide dropped, heading back there this AM.

met two other spearos getting in as i came out - hope you both had a good catch?

Was good to see a fellow spearo down at bigbury! Conditions looked great walking down the beach, but as alistair said the viz was quite milky. The further we ventured out the more it improved becoming really good in places.
The bass were everywhere but small and not worth shooting, I had a crack at a fairly nice sized one of about 3/12 pound but my spear seemed to bounce off its head! and missed a couple of others.

Saw some really nice pollock but they seemed a bit wary for some reason.

Came away with a 3lb pollock in the end, bit disappointed but there we go!
My mate had a nice pollock of about 4 lb

Nice bit of weather finally hope it lasts a while!

Hi all went last weekend and the viz was not great after going down to few of my favourite spot I came back with little to show for my effort so I went to look for new fishing ground and was rewarded with some nice fish I have to said this year has been a difficult year for spearing i hope this week end will bring better luck

Back in again today, one nice lobster, yet to weigh it but a good size, a decent 4lb pollock, very few bass seen today didn't even get a shot off.

Crazywind, what a haul! what are the wrasse like to eat, i always swim past them, some massive ones in my local spot!

Great post Nicky boy. Well done Ollie on your haul, you won't go hungry this winter. Didn't get in today but thinking of taking my gear with me for when I finish in Liskeard tonight although I will probably bin it. But I will put the torch in just in case.

If any of the Plymouth spearos want to meet up one evening during the week for a shore dive or if not to many a dive from my boat then lets get something organised.

Count me in (subject to work commitments!) it would be great to put some faces to Internet names!

That lobster was just shy of 4lbs and tasted beautiful too!

Not a easy task to organise when all are free to dive so somebody needs to say a time and we can take it from there.

Had a rare trip out on the Kayak yesterday. Good viz. Plenty of fish seen and a few taken for the freezer. May have another dabble later this afternoon. Shiny you still thinking of a shore trip? chippy afterwards

I know you have arranged a get together a couple of times Nick and not many turned up so hopefully you will get a few this time.

Tuesday before the swell arrives?

Went out of Hope Cove on my kayak on saturday ,lovely conditions ,calm warm sunny and great vis !! underwater the terrain looked great ,kelp ,stringweed,rocks ,gullies ,sandy patches etc , but there was hardly any life at all !!! I moved out to a headland into deeper water 10 metres or so and on my second dive got a 3lb pollack and while getting that off the spear to put in my kayak I spotted a crab ,so returned to that spot and grabbed that a nice 3.5lb crab ,and a black thumbnail for me !!! Today (sunday) I was in again ,Torbay this time , again good conditions with rare good vis for the bay 5-6 metres ,really enjoyable diving under big cliffs with caves ,boulders etc and huge shoals of baitfish ( sprats ? ) no mullet which is unusual but plenty of small pollack and a few bass ( of which I took 3 ,about 2lb ) so for me it was a pretty good weekend ,summer at last !!!

Well looks like I missed out meeting you boys, shame. I hope you got in ok. A bit windy.

Anyhow looks like my anual report sadly. Saturday was the window ofopportunity, excuse 2 get the dog swimming. Got down 2 whitsands out the wind vis was great just pottered in the shallows. I was hopful as a couple reported a spearo had a few bass earlier in the day. Headed on my route & after a few hundred metets found a mullet in a hole in my exitement rushed my shot & he escaped. Loads of eels wrasse, lone garfish a passing shoal of distant mullet. Vis dropped 2 a couple meters a good mullet came by but couldn't swing on him fast enough.
Found a nice gully with a great hole 4 me to hide in, the ambush was on. After a short wait a nice mullet came across & was on the spear. Then off the spear! Gutted, barb must have flapped open or didn't go through the fish far enough i guess. What an amature.. try I did but no more fish seen.
Great 2 get out but disappointed all the same.
