Spear fishing in Cape Town - Jan 2014

Hi

I'll be in Cape Town from 4th to 10th January 2014. Would love to get out spearfishing. Any contacts or companies who can help would be welcomed.

Also looking to do a level one free diving course while I'm there so recommendations on that also appreciated.

Cool, hope you come right.

Not sure what type of spearfishing you are looking to do. If it's reef fish then your best bet will be to target areas from False Bay through to South Easterly areas such as Stillbay. Unfortunately the weather has been keeping us mostly out of the water in and around Cape Town for the last couple of weeks with very few shore diveable days.

If it's game fish then the Canyon area off Cape Point is the place to be. It's the place where big Yellowfin Tuna hang out. Again, the last couple of weeks, due to the strong South Easterly winds few fishable days where had and the days the boats got to run the pickings were meagre - I've been on standby for Yellowfin Tuna spearfisning trip for the last month or so and have not had a gap to get out

Rocky Bank just outside of False Bay is a good spot to try for Yellowtail, but I must say not my favourite dive spot. The water is usually dirty with a thermocline. So if its not the sharks that you have to worry about then it's the commercial snoek fishers as they have very little regard for divers.

Most probably the best area to go at this very moment in time will be Struisbaai. It's about a 2 hour drive from Cape Town. Try Stefano at Awesome Fishing Charters. Mobile: +27 82 870 2783 Web http://www.awesomefishing.co.za. I've heard of good catches of Yellowtail being made on the 12 mile bank and some Marlin also recently being spotted.
