hey guys,

anyone got any knowledge of how long the spear should be compared to the gun?

and any tips on cutting the spear down?

cheers.

Generally 30-40cm longer than the gun length, I'd go with 30, 40 seems a little excessive to me. Get the latest issue of international freediving and spearfishing news, issue 54 july/september 2008. There is a DIY on cutting down your spears and reattaching the flopper. The biggest problem with cutting the spear down besides drilling a new flopper hole is getting the temper back in the metal. It's not too hard just need a blow torch or fire and some old engine oil.

well i have a mate who can prob do all that for me. oh kk well i will try to get it cut about 30cm then.
at the moment its 50 so its really top heavy!

thanks again helped alot!

Great responses above already. 40cm seems to be the norm, perhaps a tad shorter on smaller guns. Also several of us found the spear on the super-light handling Omer XXV (75cm-90cm sizes ) to be 5cm shorter than normal. I asked Rob Allen about using shorter spear a few years ago, as railguns are promoted as being less sensitive to spear "droop" & "wobble" and he recommended not going more than 10cm shorter -- although that might be because the long RA flopper/barb would be pretty close to the end of the barrel if you used a spear that is 10cm shorter.

I found. drilling hard steel at home is a drag and wears through even cobalt drill bits fast -- but if your friend has the proper pillar drills & the like it'll make life a lot easier. Azapa's thread tells you how to do it. Might be worth considering buying an inexpensive RA spear (about £14?) and selling/swapping your old one (ebay/local store/friends) or saving it for when you get a gun 10cm longer:D.

Your inexpensive RA spear is an expensive RA spear over in OZ. Try $100, it'd be worth more than the gun. Myles I recon you should look into getting a Rob Allen Scorpia, they are the cheapest of the RA range but are still a great gun. You could then buy a muzzle bungee and add that and you'd have a good gun that'll last you a long time if looked after. The Rob Allen stuff is pretty much bullet proof.

haha yer thanks Mr X but its too expensive over here so im prob better off buying a new gun. well im gonna use this gun for a couple of months and i'll prob want a bigger one. yer thanks my mates recommended Rob Allens so i'll have a look into that scorpio model then.
yer that DIY helped heaps too ay.

thanks heaps!
