Hi All,

I currently own two guns (Omer Excalibur Carbon and Cressi Apache) , both with the adjustable shaft guide (the small plastic guide), that you can move back and forth to adjust the spear travel or so.
At the time i bought these, other manufacturers were developing guns with a rail guide along the barrel. I thought If Omer, a reputable manufacturer did not incorporate a barrel length rail guide, then that was not needed.

As i am an amateur at freediving, and planning to remain one due to bad asthma, i havent played around too much with the idea behind rail guides.

I always wondered if a rail guide all along the barrel of the gun is better than the small plastic adjustable guide.

I am getting the Omer univeral shaft guide to give it a try and see if i land some more fish. :D

Can anyone share his thoughts about this issue ??

Thank you,

George

George,

What are the lenght of those spearguns?

If they are short guns, let say less than 90 cm you will not see much difference.

Check the existing threads. Mark from Omer USA gave a very full explanation on one (possibly two) threads already- which might be considered the anti-rail perspective. Check out the RobAllen site for a pro-rail perspective.

I dare say it doesn't make much difference. With stick on rails widely available now, even less so. Seems like it might be a bigger issue with longer guns. The Rob Allen rail also adds stiffness on their aluminium models (not all rails do) as the rail is part of the barrel tube. I have a 90cm aluminium Rob Allen railgun -- and I love it, it is one of my favourite things. I have heard others feel the same about their Omer Excaliburs.

I saw a Cressi Commanche recently, it seemed flimsier and more plasticy that the RAs -- but also sleek , fast and lightweight. It is very much a personal taste thing.

Hi Asturven,

You ask about the length of my spearguns.

They are both 100cm

Hope this helps.
meanwhile i will try and find the other threads to get more info.

Thanks for the info so far.

George

P.S I have added a photo on my profile but it doesnt come up in the computer.i can see everybody elses except mine...is there something i need to do ???
