David's book was a good basic instructional book for its time. However it's 30 years old and while some things remain constant I would say it does not reflect the present day trends in UK spearing.

I dont agree, the book has nothing in it other than some pictures that would be out of date . All the saftey, types of fish, equipment to use ,areas to fish, boating techniques etc are all still relevant today and i would recommend it to any beginner .

I'll have to agree with huntfish, David's book is well worth reading for beginner's and more experienced spearo's alike . It is a book i still pull out for reference to things like water temp' and time of year that fish species appear , more for comparison in our warmer ? climes . Old man daves point about relevence is taken , but if you can find this old classic , read it and decide for yourself .
I first came across David Way in the spearfishing competition circuit of the early 1970's. I last had contact with him in the early 1980's when he was running a second hand book business from his home somewhere in Devon. Since then I've lost track so if anyone has more recent news of him I'd be interested.
I have a copy of his book that is well thumbed. It was a brave attempt and as I said "it was a good basic instructional book for its time" and "some things do remain constant". Any book about UK spearing written by someone who's done it will tell you about spearing fish in the UK. I am not running the book down or saying anything in it is incorrect.
However if you read the book you will not find info on; Japanese open cell neoprene, cammo patterns, weight vests, carbon tracked barrels, dry barrel mamba air guns, long fins, thermo plastics/glassfibre/carbon blades, low volume wide angle silicon masks, digital still and video cameras, improved breath holding techniques, aspetto and a few other things and techniques used by present day spearo's, even beginners.
Read David's book and enjoy and if you follow his advice you will be equiped to catch fish but never the less times have moved on a bit. Maybe if we track him down he'll update it.

I once spoke to David Way on the phone & I believe he often visited our Island for the spearfishing.
Many years ago after reading his book I phoned him up & asked if he knew where I could buy a particular piece of equipment (spear maybe?) his answer was somewhat surprising as he recommend our locale dive shop here in Guernsey!
I guess if you are keen on spearfishing the book should be read but there are more up to date books around.

All good points! A few of you have mentioned reading other books, would you be able to share with the rest of us the titles so we may also read them. I'm very interested by all aspects of spearfishing and also freediving and I am very keen to learn how to maximise my time underwater.
