Hello All~

I'm looking at doing some spearfishing near Avalon. I understand the area around Lovers Cove, and the Casino are closed. Are there any legal spots around Avalon?

Thx!

I spearfish right next to the park (I mean I'm within inches of the line sometime) on the Descanso Bay side. Alot of large Calico and Sheepshead. Shallow and alot of the fish are quite tame. Some call it cheating... I call it dinner.

SB-Spearo...

Thx for the reply...
Do you know if there is a "distance line", from the ropeline of the marine park that we are legally supposed to adhere to?

I can't find anything on the DFG website for that area, that indicates how far away we need to be (legally)?

Have you ever had a problem there? Or, have others on the forum hunted successfully in the area???

Thx,

Never had a problem. I have even had tourists stop and watch me when coming out of the water with a fish, even take my picture. While hunting I keep the gun underwater, and it's not uncommon to see other swimer there so HP don't think your hunting. I think that if you stay ~20' away they won't mistake you for hunting in the perserve. Again, never had a problem, just don't make a big deal of it. If you show up on a boat and start ginding up anchovies and throw them over as chum, you might draw a bit of attention. Good Luck. I have seen 20# calico near there so you might get lucky.
