Hi guys,
I'm very interested in spearfishing, are there any places to take lessons, etc. near the New York City area, (Long Island, New Jersey, or even Rhode Island - the closer to Manhattan the better, but preferably clean water and no sharks). I'm quite comfortable swimming (practically born on the sea) but I never tried going deeper than 25 feet, that would be my limit (should I consider taking some free diving lessons as well or is the 25' limit ok?). Is it a bad idea to just go buy a gun and hit the water without any previous experience? Are the spearguns and the gear complicated or pretty easy to master? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

hey im kind of new with this ,kind of because i already did i lot of researches and read books and watch movies etc... so what can tell from what i know , i bought my spear gun right away ,so the prices of the guns are not getting lower so even if u get one u can store it at home and whenever u feel ready ,like i would advice u to go to the ocean before and practice than take a gun with you and hunt . u might do some reaserches as well it helps a lot trust me , and i think up to 30 to 40 you dont need to take any special courses for freediving
and two tips :: 1 ) try to make urself calm as possible once ur out in the ocean , and listin to calming music such as classic ones. 2) practice and practice ( i read that people who live by the water like ocean or lakes they got better results with freediving or spearfishing than people who lives in the city ) so once again pratice will make u master ;)))

Spearfishing in NY! Excellent. 25ft is more than enough to get started in the sea round here, probably round there too. Best way to find out is to take a swim and have a look around. Watch out for boats -- using a float & with diver-down flag will help people notice you. Post some images with a NY back drop when you catch something ;)

store your gun out of the heat and sunlight.
try to get access to a pool and practice loading it and aiming. practice makes perfect, and a pool is perfect to zero in your aim.
