Does anyone know what the score is with spearfishing in the Dominican Republic? First, is it legal? And what fish to look out for and where?

Looks like i am off to the Dominican Republic soon,......

Is there anyone out there, who knows if you can spearfish there...

any contacts please thankyou please

Johnny.

You can spearfish there, and I don't know if there are any rules concerning species and sizes.

I dove the Sosua area, and it wasn't very fishy.

80 km south of Santo Domingo is Salinas. Try some this numbers and see if a fisherman could take you and how much will charge you:

What is September/October like in DR? If there are 10-12 freedivers/bluewater hunters willing to pay $2500 each for 10 days down there and and off the Silver Bank - east of the Turks - I could be available for a charter/expedition in September. Is there any interest out there? Could work out of Santa Barbara de Samana. B.

Hi Blumon, I don´t know about Samana, but is in the same side of the island as Puerto Plata and the tuna season is very good and not far away of shore (so you will be near Cabarete, Sosua, Puerto Plata) . At this moment I don´t have at hand the contact information of a fisherman that can give you information about FADs but can contact you with a friend, Garet Kopeschny, garetd19@hotmail.com , that also practice Bluewater (knows the fisherman)and must be one of the best divers there.
By the way, I am looking for a job in a sailboat, so if you need a diver, sailor, cheff, or whatever I can send you my resume and be ready to be in the water in a couple of months, Huiiija !!! :)
Here is some info of me and Salinas

Beside the good tuna time, I remember that in Salinas november was the season of marlins ...

Hello, guys!
I plan to go to La Romana. Do you have any info at all on spearfishing down there? What's the nearest good spot - I am modest - 10 meters depth - a couple of fish of any legal size would do. Do I need a license? Can one rent weights? Thank you!

I haven´t been there in a long time ... But You don´t need license. If you contact a local with references would be better to make a good catch. I guess you can get weigths there but better take yours.
Ask Garet Kopeschny at garetd19@hotmail.com He is one of the best divers in the Punta Cana area.
Good Luck !

Thank you! I will ask him!
BTW Has anyone travelled with spearfishing gear by American Airlines? Do they charge anything extra for a bag long enough to accomodate regular Picasso Blackteam-size fins?

Hi Simon,

Have you check this month edition of the French Apnea Magazine? There is an article about Spearfishing in The Dominican Republic, written by Angelo Germidis if you cant find the magazine, let me know and i will send the article to you ;)

Cheers,
Marco
