Hey guys!

I'am a norwegian student moving to Gran Canaria in the autum to complete my last year of upper secondary school. I will stay in Arguinguin for 10 months.

Spearfishing is new to me but i would like to engage in this sport when moving to GC.

It would be very helpfull if someone could share their experiences or tips; is there any good spots in the southern area? I have som other questions as well:
Do I need a license to practice spearfishing on GC?
I hear the water is cold, would a suit of 5 mm be suficcient? Could i use this suit for other watersports as well, sutch as surfing?
What species of fish should I hunt for?

Thank you!
Regards Oskar

i never speared when i was there but did some shallow dives. the temp its not too bad i was just in board shorts. as for fish there are tones of little fish and a few pedagic species milling around but not many mid sized, maybe it was just where i was (playa de vargas, south east)

Hi Guys,

I am heading for gran canaria this Week-end and staying for a week. (13/03/2016 to 20/03/2016)
I want to bring along my spear fishing gear, but if I could avoid taking the diving weights with me it would be easier (I have to keep some place in the bags for my kids' stuff !! :) ).
Do you know if anyone can lend/rent me 9kg ?

Are there any spear fishing forbidden places (can't find a map of reserves) ?
Is a licence necessary (I would think not !?)
Any other tips you would like to share ... would anyone be keen on going spear fishing together ?
(my best shot is a wahoo in New caledonia ... but it was quite some time ago !)

Please let me know asap if you can help me !

Cheers !

I just came back from level 2 course. This was in Tenerif. Water was about 20 degrees and was really comfortable with 5mm. There are some freedive schools in Gran Canaria, they might be able to help with you with weights and info regarding spear fishing.

Hi, a bit late but I'll add the info for any future readers: you need a licence. In Spain they are theoretically national but in practice they are regional, so you must get one for the Canaries. Some regions allow you to order it via email although it is not easy to get the information. To spearfish you meed a special license and it requires a medical certificate translated into Spanish (so you can't use the commercial 3rd party fishing license providers).

If anyone has more info on the subject pls pm me so I csn add it to my blog post on regulations & licenses.
