Are we allowed to take our spearguns on a flight if they are in checked in luggage? Just spoken to Ryanair and they are not happy. Anybody travelled with a speargun to Italy?

The problem you have is that you mentioned the gun word :rcard It isnt against the law as far as Im aware to take spearguns into Italy but what you must do is pack them well and very securely, then label them as "Fishing Equipment" not spear guns. It may even be worth taking off the handle of your gun and putting it inside your main luggage, so that it is unusable straight off and wont look like a gun on the x-ray scans.
When I first started flying, they were carried as hand luggage! Havent times changed

Thanks Alison, spoke to girl at Ryanair and it was a definate no no, so I suppose we just take the risk and see what happens. Ohter option is to by me a new gun when I get there Hmmmmmmmm

as an italian, I normallly fly (to sicily or sardinia from continental Italy) with my spearguns packed with normal luggage. Never had any serious problems. The very only problem (just a waste of time) is that my gunbags are sometimes taken by airport police for control: thence I have to go to the police office, tell them that it's just fishing gear and they say: "ok". After that I simply pick my guns and go free.

Thanks for that, the trouble I'll have is that I don't speak italian apart from the basics!!!! How easy is it buy a gun out there? loads of spearo shops in the south?

You'll be fine as long as its well packed and checked in with your main luggage; Ryanair are just covering their bums, ask them if you can tack fishing equipment and see what the response is :) Mind you, its an excuse to buy a new gun rofl

Hmm the plot thickens, I could get a new gun and leave it in Italy thereby forcing me to return for more fun!!

Beats Dorset in the winter

sorry, i forgot to write that control is at the arrival only. When you depart you just have to deliver the gun packed in bags together with the other luggage, without telling (it's not necessary, because fishing spearguns are not classified as weapons for italian laws). Notice that if you carry airguns, you have to unload the air to avoid accidents due to flight pressure (that's severely checked).

where exactly in the south? I can send you personal messaqge with address if you want

Thats it new gun it is, easier than all the hassle and was looking for a new 1000 anyhow. Any one recommend any good shops? Landing in Pescara then going south.

Spaghetti, please do. Not sure where I'm going its all down to the people I'm meeting. A bit disorganised I know but its a freebie so who can complain!!!!!!

Flying to Pescara then being met at airport and of to the seaside we go!

give a couple of hours and I will email alison with addresses from pescara way down south. bye bye

SilentAssasin's email is working but I can pass on a message with pleasure (with email actually but hey we're all different rofl) Ive sent a test message so you should have a new email at your Phillipparboiled (minced it a bit) account :)

Left Pisa last night with 2 guns, packed separately, the guy on the BA check-in desk saw that I had 2 Cressi bags and asked if I had any "guns" in them, I said that I did and he called security over to get them checked, they also checked my knives as well. He said that the Italian security at airports are getting a bit over zealous at the moment and that it is much better to get them checked at check-in as it saves a load of hassle having to go down to the security rooms after the luggage has gone through the x-ray machines, this happened to me last yeat flying out of Genoa with my Underwater Scooter, spent best part of 2 hours explaning what it was, and that it wasn't a torpedo!!

looks like I'll but a speargun over in Italy and when I've finished post it back or leave it with friends. Bloody terrorists have got a lot to answer for, trying to ruin my fun tsch tsch.

Why dont we all form an army and go fight the terrorists. We must be packing quite an arsenal between us? I can see it now, thousands of wetsuit clad nutters carrying spearguns running over the mountains in Afghanistan looking for a bloke with a beard!

I feel a cartoon coming on!

I have taken guns too and from Italy with Ryanair and had no problems at all.

I was asked to pass the bag through oversized items, and that was it

I have flown from Guernsey to London and then from London on to Greece with two spearguns - I just packed them well in a piece of drain pipe having taken the bands off and put them in a separate bag. They went through with the baggage no problems at all. You are more likely to have trouble with a bottle opener and a pair of tweezers if UK security are anything to go by!!
