hey david,
i'm not brazilian, but i've travelled there a few times...
azores not yet, but definitely one of these days, si deus quizer.
what's good here about spearfishing is that you very often find pelagics really close to the coast, because the island is so young and it drops so steeply so quickly. some places you have drop-offs of more than 80-100 m less than 50m from shore, gnarly volcanic lava too.
best time for fishing is right about now, summertime before the rainy season gets in action. with the mozzies at the moment, and if you want to visit with your children, you'd be better off to wait a bit though.
we get excellent fishing all year around, just in winter (reverse the seasons for your side) we sometimes get really big swell. usually 3/4 days swell and a small window where one can fish.
the law here for spearfishing is the same as in france, you have to be older than 16 to fish, so you're aware of that.
plenty of good places to go where there are no navy controls though, and very different types of fish from one side of the island to the other.
when you have made up your mind about when you want to visit, let me know, i'll show you around...i need to practice my portuguese.
até logo.
