A small brief I hope it will help the new spearos who need more info. regarding spearfishing in QATAR...

1- speargun:
80-100 cm euro style guns with one or two rubber bands (18-20mm, power boost or mean green) , float or reel is preferred in case of a large or strong fighter fish like Cuda, King mackerel, Trevally or Milkfish.
if your into spearfishing reefs and rocks or shallow water I think a Pneumatic (air gun) 50-80cm gun will help you more and will cut the loading time, and much easier to maneuver in caves or between rocks.
if your more into long shots and blue water ... stay with the Euro rubber guns.... much much more accuracy, speed and power.

larger wood spearguns like American, hawaiian or australian guns are not preferred here, because its really rare to find or shoot a very large fish that need this type of guns here!

2- the prey:
- GROUPER: the main targeted fish here GROUPER locally known as (Hamur) ... you can find it all around the year in caves and between rocks and if your lucky enough some times you can find it out on the sand just watching you!!!:inlove (mostly at dawn and sunset), bigger ones can bend your shaft!!

- Seabream and Emperor: locally known as (Faskr, Shaeiri) very common fish here and one of the first fishes that you will shoot probably!! they like to hide between reefs, very easy to shoot them. when they are out the escape very fast! you can find them all around the year.

- Trevally: locally known as (Jash) one of the favorites for the spearos here... nice fish to shoot best time for it here from DEC-APR, a strong fighter too specially the large ones .... very strong, better to use a reel or float.

- King mackerel: locally known as (Chana'ad) the spearos dream here specially the big ones, its like yellow tuna to others!! best time for it here from DEC-APR, its a very strong fish that will fight you to the last second.. don't think in shooting the big ones (15-60kg) without a float or reel...

I have to go now, Next post will be about spearfishing places in QATAR

Hey thanks Sanad for the informative post. Looking forward for the next post of places to spearfish in qatar

Some spearfishing places...

1- the old reef (see the map): A nice place for every thing, Clean sandy beach and the deep water is very close..... down there there is some cars , mini bus and a White TOILET!!!rofl really!!!
King mackerel like this area, and usually it will be in the middle of the water .. so its good if you dive to the middle and stop moving as long as you can, FLASHER will help allot specially if its sunny with clear water !!!
Baracuda is there most of the time ... and if your lucky you will find a grouper around the cars or the bus!!
I took a big king from there .... and saw some medium tuna ... never close!

see ya in the next post.....:friday

there is some places that I used to go ... see if your interested in any of them, and i'll try to map it to you...

2- Al Khor: (small road that go inside the sea about 200m, rocks in both sides.. usually you can find snapper and some times grouper there)

3- Al Gharia Resort: a nice resort 80km from doha taking the north road, the resort is going inside the sea, Rocks all around the resort mostly 1-3m deep... used to take emperor, snapper, groupers and cudas from there. (when the water is clear!!!!!!!!!) easy to reach and find!

4- Ras Broug: this area is very close to the bridge that will connect Qatar and Bahrain.... used to take lots of fish there, can be reached with a 2WD but its not recommended, tough road....... can be reached via Dukhan highway. A Guide is a MUST!

5- Khor Al odaid: one of the best places for spearfishing every thing, amazing views and sands .... after reaching Sealine resort .... you go off road, 4WD and a good Guide is a MUST!

BRACUDA ....... help me man to add more places ..... start with offshore ... then will go inshore!!!!:friday

Can you guys try to pinpoint those locations on google earth and attach it if its possible?

Thanks

Howzit, thats alot of usefull info. I believe the part about the toilet!!!! I've seen worse here in Kuwait.
Do you have any info on shore dives in Kuwait?
The only place I have heard of is Kubar island(for a SMALL fee - KD145.000), not realy an option for me.

lol sry this is the first time i have seen this post :D.. well you have named most of the good places for shore dives i can only recomend getting a zodiac + 20hp engine to access places 2-5 km off shore there are alot of them near "smaisma" "alkhor" "aldikhira" but you cant reach them swimming .

as for offshore spots weeeeell thats classified :p

I meant in Kuwait, or on the Kuwait shore. Or at least closer than Failaka island. From what I've heard most of the guys here use scuba gear for spearfishing :naughty - a little unfare if you think that the only advantage the fish have in this sport is that they can breath under water.

I am sorry never lived in Kuwait b4.

but I know a good site i used to borwse it from time to time, full of useful info. regarding fishing in kuwait..... but its in arabic!!!

http://www.garooh.com/phpBB2/index.php

I don't know if you read arabic or not!!!!

anyways give it a try.

Thanx!!!!
No, I dont read arabic but I'm pretty sure I'm in the right place if I need somebody to translate for me.rofl

I'm new to spear fishing , just got myself a wet suit for the winter and I was wondering if there the fishing is better in the winter , and if it is where can I go. I promise that I will not abuse the spots besides I rarely get any free time to go fishing. I have fished in the western side of the country near Zubara, fasht lusail, fasht al ghabi, marouna, fasht lusail.
all of these place have some nice but all of the sizes are small to average.
I have not fished in the open waters yet, how easy is it to fish in khour Al-A'dead.
so please any advice would be great.
thank you

Hello Odai;

Fishing in the east coast is also great... Khor al udaid is definitely one of the best places here... U have plenty of places around in the inland sea, but just check the tide condition as currents can get pretty strong (and of course never dive alone)... I also found that sea conditions (visibility, currents etc...) tend to be more consistent in winter season than summer... Right at the moment, there aren't too many fish around (I guess its not the season yet), but still you can enjoy some good catches...
Another nice spot to check is the old reef close to sealine in messaid.

I hope this helped :)

Regards

Btw here in Qatar overfishing and over exploitation is a major issue... Hence I guest most spearos you'll meet will be reluctant to give you their secret or best spots... as it happens very often that you luckily find a nice secluded and isolated spot with nice fish etc... but once you tell to couple of ppl it justs spread out and you come couple of weeks later to find not a single fish left and even the coral in the seabed (if found) might be destroyed from over anchorring... sad but true....

thank you very much for this advice, and I totally agree with you on the over fishing here. there are no rules and there are no size limits.
i will try the inland sea next week inshallah ( wait for the Eid crowds to clear). how deep is it out there?? judging by google earth it looks pretty deep. and lately I have been reading about "CD FLASHERS" does it help??
thank you again
Odai.

hi... do you guys have contact details for the suppliers of spearfishing equipment??? only place i found was at the fishing souqs.
thanks

Sanadw, don't know if you're still in Qatar but been here for a year and tired of diving by myself. Only free dive and spear. Let me know if you'd be interested in getting together. This goes out to anyone looking to dive and fish ;)
