hi all,

I will be in the UK (near Wales)in October . I have visited the Gower Coast before (my wife is from Hereford) and always wondered how spearfishing would be like there !!!

if someone could answer these questions it would be great:

1. Do i need a spearfishing permit (and if so can i obtain one, i come from Cyprus - Europe !!!)

2. What is the water temperature (degrees) like in October !!!

3. is visibility good enough (October) to try it out ???

4. what size gun would you reccomend (id like to bring one with me)

5. What fish-shelfish are you allowed to fish-get ???

6. Tides and Currents. Where i come from we have NO SUCH THING !!! this is the one and only thing that worries me. I know that i would have to go with someone that has good knowledge of the area , so if any of you are interested for a session or two , please drop a line

Thank you,

George

hi buddy
ive dived a few spots around the gower, theres some good fishing to be had but it doesnt take alot to mess the viz up (anything from the southwest)! you dont need a permit over here its pretty much a free for all but you have to keep to the min land sizes! water temp depends on the summer but should be around 15-16 degrees! gun size, i use a 77cm gabbiano but anything from 75cm-100cm is ok. most spearos over here use guns around 75cm. as for currents there is some strong ones around ( JamesT knows about them haha) but i dont know the area that well and i had a boat when i dived it so i didnt worry about it, somebody else might be able to help on that if not ask in a fishing tackle shop, dive shop or the coastguard. hope that helps have fun

hi scottie,

Thanks for your reply,

i now know that the water temp will be the same as our winter temps here !!!:) 5mm then...

short gun then....85 ...

ill need to be lucky for the visibility !!!

ill check the min sizes....

TIDES-CURRENTS !!!! this one is the one that still worries me . i think the only way to tackle this is with a dive buddy familiar with the area and the tides...
ill hang around see if i can 'fish' a dive buddy !!!

Thanks,

George

I tried to ring the swine flu hot line but all I got was a nasty crackling roflroflrofl

Pembroke bay is my nearest beach. Where's Wales?

Dave

Pembroke is in fact a beautiful large sandy bay in the North of our Island
The bay is surrounded by a anti tank wall built by the Germans during the Islands occupation however Pembroke was uses to land the British troops who liberated us on May 9th 1945!
Pembroke is used for many different recreational pass times like kite surfing, sand surfing, diving & fishing. Many fishing records come from the bays headland including British records.

re. shell fish, I've never dived Gower but there used to be some impressive mussel beds there when I was a child. When I visited a decade later the mussels were fewer and much smaller -- not sure if that was just due to the time of year or pollution/etc.. In recent years, pollution controls were increased (although Gower never really struck me as polluted - it is has Swansea & Port Talbot on one side of it & the Pembrokeshire oil installations down the otherside (albeit quite some distance away) but I read in a sea angling magazine this year that one of my favourite beaches is being undermined by offshore dredging nearby. They tried to launch a boat and I think the sand collapsed under the trailer causing them some headaches -- whether caused by dredging or not, something to look out for.
