am planning a trip to Italy on the Elba island. I have seen some very nice spearfishing videos from there, but how are the rules? Is it normal Italy rules or do I have to look for reservations to avoid?

Im going camping, so shooting a fish or 2 for dinner would be nice, but other than that I think it will be mostly sightseen

Is there any sites with good descriptions of med-fish that you can eat and the ones to avoid - as well as size regulations? Or as an alternative a book - hopefully english

What hunting techniques are used? Im guessing aspetto dives, hidding on the bottom? - what depths do I have to reach to find fish?

Lots of questions, hope someone can help me

No license required, buoy or float with diveflag mandatory. You can spearfish 500 meters away from beaches in presence of swimmers, but if you go very early in the morning (at sunset, around 5 or 6 a.m) you can spearfish close to beaches too, and will have less boats running on your head.

techniques are related to fish tergeted: you can alternate a mix of aspetto, agguato and peeping into holes, under rocks and between the weed: it takes a very looooooong post to explain the techniques for each fish. I can majke it for you, but it will take time and a few posts to follow.

Thanks for reply! Very nice with some pictures of fishes - a few of them I recognise from earlier dive trips!

How deep is required to find fish? I think Im ok with around 20-25 meters - but denmark is so shallow, so I get way to little depth practice :)

When you'll be there, you will see what depth is needed. Fish in Italy are generally deeper than anywhere else, and in summer that's even deeper. But you may find bluefish or gilthead in just one meter of water.
Start to explore shallow, watch around, try to understand if there's sign of life, peep under the rocks, keep an eye on the bait (schools of small fish: if they're nervous, if they stay in numerous groups, a big predator may be around). And if you don't find anything, try some deeper dive 15 to 20 meters. There's no rule of thumb.

im liking ure picture of scorpion fish, our yacht is named after it, its called rascacio in spainish :) mallorca diving is abit rubbish if im honest compared to spain and portugal, the fish are very small and undersized over here even in 20-30m of water, any tips spaghetti ???

tips for scorpion fish? The hard part is to spot them because their red camo becomes a perfect camouflage underwater, and moreover they tend to stay motionless under or in between rocks and crevices. Not the easisest to spot.
Another caution is they have poisonous stingers in the dorsal fin and in the edge of the gills. Nowehere near as deadly as rockfish poison, but...it hurts!

For the rest the mediterranean red scorpion fish is an easy catch: aim, shoot, done. They won't run, they won't fight. A 3 pronger tip will help to paralyze them, for better handling in the retrieving process (again concerning with the poison sting hazard).

In case that you do get stung, imerse hand (or whichever part of body you have been stung to) into hot water (~say about 45C), for 10-20 mins. It will relieve the pain.
Scorpion fish poison (as well as many other poisons in the sea) is thermally unstable.
Be careful with hot water - do not get scalded!

Hey mate, for regulations give a look to www.medfish.com

On its homepage you can find "Local Laws" (Left side on your screen).

Have fun and dive safe.

Hi
As spotted before I as so far I was inactive on our forum – the reason is I dislike internet, besides the must at work.
I have read some interesting post and have an question!
In recent days we are planning a sailing trip around Sicily. Personally I am declared spear fishing enthusiast, but my friends on this boat are not and are planning to take their scuba equipment. I know that spear fishing is forbidden with scuba- I never do it, but what I have heard (unofficial) is that it is also forbidden to have spear gun and scuba gear on a boat even
if you don’t use it at the same time?

Dear Simon,
it's true. You can't have scuba diving gear and spearguns on the same boat.

Besides, you need a spearfishing license.

It's free and you can get it at coast guard office.

this is a old post but i though i would try to ask anyway im going to rimini this summer and i am trying to find some online map`s to see depths etc to see where i can go spearfishing but i cant find anything. anyone have some tips ?

Hi guys,
I'm going to the Isole Eolie in June and to the Naples bay in September, by boat. Could anyone (@spaghetti ?) please share some spearshishing spots to try (I found only Rinella and Strombolicchio) and link to the official spearfishing regulations? I will be thankful and will not catch a lot (in any) because I'm a complete newbie, 10-12 m max :)
Many thanks in advance!!
