I am completely new to spearfishing but I know it is something I am excited to get into. I work for the airlines and i travel all over the place so i figured this could be something i could do while I'm somewhere vacationing and enjoy it. I am from Biloxi, MS--we have oil rigs and florida around the corner which i assume would be good for spearfishing. So i was wondering what kind of gear is perfect for this environment. I have been doing research online to kind of price stuff out (stuff as in mask, fins, snorkel, Speargun, wetsuit, etc.) but i would like some help/input as to what size or brand to aim towards/stay away from. Thanks in advance!!

Welcome Thaddeus :). I suggest that you start by having a look around the DeeperBlue Forums; the various "Dummies Guides" are the best place to start. There are some quite large fish around rigs, so something fairly robust would make sense, so perhaps a railgun (e.g. Mako/Rob Allen/Rabitech/Orcas/Hammerhead) or one if the American "woodies", e.g. by Daryl Wong or Riffe. There are also European spearguns at the bigger end of the scale suitable for that sort of fishing, from Greek, Italian, French & Spanish companies - look for the bigger, tougher designs/models (e.g. Beuchat Marlin).

Welcome on DB! I'd agree with Mr. X . A robust gun like ROb Allen and MAko are good guns. If you're going to be spearing around oil rigs and deep water a floatline would perhaps be advisable especially since you're new in the game. Reelguns and beltreels are for the advanced spearo. I personally prefer floatlines as you can leave the gun to go to the surface once you've shot your fish.

I've seen videos of diving around oil rigs and there are some monsters there!! And of course always dive with a buddy or 2.

Hope it helps. CHeers.

P.S.
LEt us know of any stuff you shoot ;-)
