Hi guys! I'm pretty new to spearfishing, been going out around baggy and morte point, and the issue i've been having is the visibility, i can barely see the end of the gun sometimes. any ideas of good places around north devon where its any better?

N devon depends on tide, swell, wind and recent rain! Perfect conditions for a week can reveal the end of your gun. Go to the bottom and you may find the viz is better. Only plus is fewer spearos up here due to the viz being like it is.

Ideal. Well hopefully with the weather being like it has this week I'll get a good session in tomorrow. Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated!

I've never had much luck regarding vis in N. Devon... I've tried quite a few times over the years too because I love it up there so much. In close at Milook was interesting at a particularly high tide once for me... Bass a plenty in the white water but I only caught one and with a lucky shot. Some of the small bays around Tintagel can be pretty amazing too. I've also had some good vis (+ Bass) at Crackington which is not much further down the coast?
I assume that the Bristol Channel is murky at the best of times... but snorkelling off Lundy a few summers ago was probably the best UK vis I have ever experienced... so I always give N. Devon a try once in a while... you never know?

Hi, im in Bideford and regularly fish in the north devon area. Unfortunately we rarely have ideal conditions =[ when we do get a good patch of settled weather our coastline is perfect, me and my mate spend most of our time spearing in the hartland area. Its nice and rocky/reefy and lots of weedy boulders that bass, wrasse and mullet seem to like. Baggy and morte have some ideal water close in to the cliffs etc but due to the currents and races on both of the points the water hardly ever seems to clear =[ hoping to put allot more time in the water next summer though! =]

I'm looking to get out with someone either north or South Devon, I'm just getting into spear fishing as it's been something Iv wanted to do for years. I'm pretty confident in the water and have a lot of experience kayak fishing as well as shore.

I don't work weekends so am free most. I would really appreciate someone letting me tag along for a bit more confidence!

Thanks Karl.

Hi Karl,
how's it going? Where r u based? I live in north Devon and good vis is rare so better to go south coast if you've got the choice...? There are a couple of clubs down south aswell, Dave at exe spearfishing club (on Facebook) is really helpful and they do club meets.

The British spearfishing association (Facebook) have started 'come try spearfishing days' I went to one a couple weeks ago on the south coast and met a really nice group of guys and they were really helpful, went out for a dive and had a BBQ. learnt a lot of little tricks of the trade which have made life a lot easier in the water and made me a lot more confident. Il be going again if you need a lift!

Hope this is helpful..

Hi thanks for getting back to me. I'm just off the main road from minehead to Taunton. About 15 minutes outside of Taunton. I am hoping to get out as much as possible down South Devon. Going to one of the taster sessions would be a great help I think just to get a but if confidence up. And I will keep an eye on that group, thanks. And thanks for the offer of a lift! Might be a bit out of your way though, luckily for me it's pretty much an hours drive either south or North!

Headed out of brixham just off the beach by the break water today. Just to have a look and get a feel for the UK water clarity.. Was pretty poor vis but I put it down to a rough day and night yesterday. Didn't see anything bigger then a 2" blend but nice to get out none the less!
