Hi everyone. I'm new here. Do any of you have any tips on improving breath-hold time? My PB outside water is 4 minutes. In water 3 min 5 secs, and dynamic apnea(swimming) is 1 min 16 secs.

I train for spearfishing by putting 2 floats with rocks attatched and a line of 12m between the rocks(as a guideline). I then start swimming underwater, stop at the rock(hold onto it 'cus its 1.5m water) and then swim back. My ''dives'' average 1 minute.

Any other ideas? Thanx guys.

Read-up on Shallow Water Blackout (& make sure you father & brother have read up on it too). If you are going to do this (it is much more dangerous than most non-apneaists would expect), make sure that you have somebody who is competent & able to rescue & resuscitate you watching over you (not day-dreaming nearby). Suggest you try reading the freediving area of this forum for more on this sort of stuff - I tend not to train for this, I don't want to overcome my body's natural defences. Some people practice on dry land - again, care is required as it is not without its dangers but perhaps safer.

+1 for advice above but 60 seconds down is more than enough time MozSpearer. With your current (good) breath holding abilities under your belt you would be better off concentrating/training on knowing more about the sea life you take and the environment you take it from. For example, most if not all larger fish will be females which will cease to produce thousands of offspring if they are 'all' on our stringers... being selective will not only help to maintain your local stocks where you spear but will also make you feel part of an underwater ecosystem rather than a marauding intruder. When starting out most will take anything that moves so knowing as much as possible about what you are actually spearing from getgo is an optimum way to proceed. Also try not to be influenced 'too much' by everything you read/view on DB (good as it is) and set your own targets, expectations and personal limits... rely on your own increasing experience, knowledge & judgement... but most important... stay safe!

Luck & visibility

The very best thing that I ever did for spearfishing was to find a buddy that was experienced, a better diver and taught by example.
