Hi guys,

I'm planning a trip to the Tyrrhenian sea with my GF, she likes to spearfish some but not as much as I, so we booked a hotel with the beach view so she can enjoy the sun while I enjoy the blue sea . The thing is if I catch any fish I'm not sure how I'm going to get them cooked. Do any of you have tips on spearfishing but staying in a hotel (thus no BBQ, no kitchen in the room, etc)?

Thanks,
Gab

Barbecue on the beach?
Meet local spearos and barbecue with them?
Fire on the beach to heat up some rocks while you dig a pit for a ground oven?
Find a friendly restauraunt/owner/chef who'll let you cook it or will do it for you?
Ask the hotel the same?
Find a hostel and offer them a handful of loose change or some free fish or beer in exchange for use of the cooking facilities?

Probably other I'm missing too. I'd try any of the above though.

Thanks, hadn't thought of the hostel one. I'm not sure it is permitted in Italy to grill on the beach though, it hadn't crossed my mind for that reason I think, but maybe it is. Hehe, just found an article named "Tourists beware: if it's fun, Italy has a law against it" so it probably is :-(.

Thank you

I wonder if they have laws against fun for general use or for when they need them. They do that in France. It's illegal to carry a pocket knife, yet it's a country with more people carrying pocket knives like the ubiquitous Laguiole every day than we have here where it's legal within limits.

The only people who get trouble for it are people asking for and making trouble. I'm a bit of a libertarian so laws like that and selective enforcement wind me up something rotten, but that's how it is. Definitely something to look for local knowledge on, I think.

It's definitely not illegal to fish there is it? Just thinking about "if it's fun, there's a law against it".

Yes, you may be right, from the article though even building a sand castle in some places is not legal thoug....

From this post it is not illegal to spearfish, I was quite surprised not even a permit is needed.

I just read that article. Wow. That is appalling.
Assuming you mean the one on the Independent website:

"The drive against begging has been taken up by many towns – including Assisi, home of St Francis, who began his religious life as a mendicant."
stood out as the most shocking of all. The town who's name has become globally associated with the poor, kindness, helping and much more has outlawed begging. Stunning.

Going by that article I think your best bet is to make contact with someone from the areas you plan to fish and make sure nothing you plan on is illegal. It sounds likely grilling on the beach could be an issue if mayors are being given a pass to outlaw all their pet peeves but if you're in an area with a mayor who likes grilling on the beach you're probably all set.
Local knowledge has to be key there.

The Tyrrhenian Sea is a big place so I don't suppose there could be any general answer to cover it. You'll have to get more specific in your search, I think.

Thanks for your help and suggestions! I'll post along how it went and what I did
