Greetings All,

I was just wondering what your opinions & general consensus might be about purchasing/using what would be technically classified as a "spearfishing" wetsuit for freediving?

I was looking at the Oceanos Freediving wetsuit:
http://www.oceanos-wetsuits.com/freediving-suits

But my thoughts are, being that the suit is kinda custom tailored, if I should want to switch it up to something else in the future, as well as the possibility of my bodily measurements changing over time I thought about buying something of "standard measurements". Specifically, this Seac Python Plus westuit:
http://www.seacsub.com/apnea/wetsuits/python-plus-black.html

My thoughts are it might be easier to try & sell the Seac if, as I mentioned there comes a time in the future I would want to switch it up. Again being that it's kind of a "Standard measurement(s)" suit as opposed to tailored.

I've learned in the course of my research that Freediving specific suits do yield the best results, etc for freediving. BUT, I only intend on using the suit really for training courses (out here in the Northeast US, and Florida), otherwise I'm usually traveling to & diving in typically warmer waters of the Caribbean & tropical locations :D So it's not like I plan on using it a ton.

Apologies for the long-winded question (am I over-thinking this?), but I just really wanted to see what you guys think? And yes I am on budget so that's why I'm looking at these.. . $250 I can live with for now ;)

Your thoughts Gentlemen? OH and ladies too ? :sneaky:

Thank you kindly!

Jay

What thickness do you intend on getting that will fork for the northeast AND Florida??

Also, the market for used wetsuits is pretty slim.

Buy what fits you.
Custom is better than off the rack.

A spearfishing suit is fine for freediving.
The difference is just a chest-loading pad, really.

They have nylon / Lycra on the outside and that is great for durability!

Consider all-black, unless camo is really your thing.

Hi Apneaddict ! Thanks for the reply !

5mm - Dutch Springs, PA (primarily summer) & Atlantic coast of FL (spring/summer)

The Oceanos would be a bit more ideal as it's freediving specific, and it's about $60 less. I may very well focus on that one a bit more ;) And thank you for pointing out to me the fact that a market for used wetsuits might be a slim one, I appreciate your input on that!

Although camo looks cool, I deep down inside prefer all black .. Call me an oceanic ninja! :D

Thank you again kind Sir, I actually have read up on your blog several times & I appreciate your sharing of knowledge.

Regards,

J

Hi Apneaddict & others ;)

I wanted to ask about "farmer-john" (suspender type looking) vs. the high-waisted pants. I'm kinda lookin at that Seac wetsuit but I can only find ones with the john types pants. I've read about cutting them but would rather not  In your opinion, would it be advisable to avoid the john type bottoms for freediving? Or would it be a negligible issue?

Thank you!

Farmer John is warmer, given the added amount of neoprene coverage on your torso.

Since you're going 5mm, I don't think you'd need / want the added warmth for Florida. It might already be Warner than ideal with high-waist.

Also, more neoprene means more restrictive and more buoyancy change with depth. Neither are ideal on a 5mm.

Why Seac?
Why not custom, if it costs a similar amount?

Hey, thanks AA.

I hear you on the warmth, especially in regards to FL. I own & used a 3mm long-sleeve shorty wetsuit out in Hawaii ("winter-time" lol) and while it's great in the water man it gets hot on land QUICK! After my initial posting I was looking back at the courses in FL & coulda sworn they specified 5mm but I don't see that  I definitely need the 5mm for Dutch Springs (I cannot tolerate cold water/being cold AT ALL :arghh:), but I would rather not buy an additional, thinner wetsuit for FL training .. money is just kind of an issue for me lately (a lot on my plate) :( But who knows maybe come the time I'll have the $$ to spring for a 3mm wetsuit. I'm big on doing things correctly, efficiently & responsibly.

I think I'm just judging by looks is all (I know, I know :sorry:) .. but in light of everything I think I'm gonna rock with the Oceanos one I linked to above (y) That's why this site is so awesome, cause of valuable insight & suggestions from members such as yourself. And I thank you once again.

I'll let ya know how I make out!

J
