Next week the World Championship in Portugal. Any anticipations about team composition? (curious about spanish, french, english, portuguese, american and croatian).
The sensation is that some portuguese (Rui Torres most of all) or atlantic spanish (Pepe Vinha) is going to be the winner this time: they'll play in their homewaters, and had plenty of time to prepare the field.
For the Italians, who hold the title won in Chile 2004, bad news are followed by worse news: our team had only 10 days to prepare the field marks in unknown oceanic waters, and the team itself is not at the top: the only "superstars" will be Bellani (1st in 2004) and Ramacciotti (8th in 2004).
Among the top 6 italian spearos, one couldn't go cause disqualified by Cmas, another has been red carded by the national federation for ethic misbehaviour, another has serious family trouble in this times and another refused to go as a reserve/backup. :head

The English team is Mick Veal, Dave O Callaghan and our own superstar, Pete Crawford, who a 71 will be the oldest participant in a World Championships ever!(His first World Championships was 1973)
My money is on Rui Torres to win, but the UK team are all very experienced, and conditions are not too far from our own, so I am hoping for a good result
cheers

The Aussie team is: Ian Puckeridge (6 time OZ champ) and Alex Lewis (QLD Champ). So far anyways... Not sure of any others.

Be interesting to see how they cope with European conditions.

Average size of fish speared in comp here is 1kg (max around 30kg).

What Portugal like?

The New Zealand team is Shane Fitzmaurice, on his own, as everyone else had to pull out, he has been out there scouting for the past month though!
cheers

Hello, the spanish team is: Pedro Carbonell (3 times world champion), Juan fuentes ( a deep fisher and very strong) and santiago lopez cid (young and potent).

Where abouts in Portugal is the competition taking place?

Dave, this Crawford still there at his age is impressive! Is he really still so strong, or does he just hold some kind of "moral authority"?
And BTW: is Dave O Callaghan any Dave we know...?
-------
ok: Italy:
-Stefano Bellani (Cressi gear)
-Maurizio Ramacciotti (C4/Seatec)
-Fabio Antonini (Omer)
-Sandro Mancia (Effesub).
Bellani is the world champion in charge, but we all support Ramacciotti, who classified 8th, 3nd, 2nd and 7th in the last 4 editions of the WC, always in the world top ten, but never winning anything. He deserves a 1st this time! (but I wouldn't say he's an old man: he's same age as me...)

Pete is still a very impressive diver (since retiring he dives nearly every day) Dave O Callaghan is not me! I was eligible to go but couldn't make it because of family comittments
cheers

So the best guys are unethical, unstable, or arrogant prima donas?

That's too bad.

March is nt so much polivalent than others. he specialised in deep fishing and Pepe viña is not on his best moment (the last spanish championship was very bad for him). Although without this 2 champions, spain have a luxe team.

Yesterday the opening cerimony, now 5 days for the official field recognition, then the challenge.

The tournament is next 16 th and 17th, with an awfull weather forecast for those days.

Viña is not there but keep an eye on Santiago Lopez, he is a natural born killer is those horrible weather conditions.

Cheers

Ivan

in one comp this year I ran about 4 miles (in searing heat!) to get to a good spot.... I looked around and there right behind me was Pete Crawford!!!
