A good friend of mine use to be big in to sailing and is due to move down to Swansea for university. I am giving him one of my wetsuits as he has told me that the freediving stuff I have shown him has really inspired him to get back in to the water.

He has his own transport and will be capable of going as far as Pembrokshire, so thought as a leaving present I would get him his first speargun.

I have read a lot of reviews and am sticking with the Cressi Comanche, the 2004 world champ winner gun.

My question really though is, has anyone any experience with scubastore? This is the speargun I am after for him.

Cressi Comanche. Spear guns Spear guns, Scubastore.com, buy, offers, dive

Will also be pointing him in the right direction for fins/weight belt/mask/snorkel and all of the safety tips too, starting with never dive alone etc.

Are there any spearo's in South Wales who don't mind someone tagging along with them?

Thanks guys!

I'm not from South Wales so can't help you out there but if you're after kit you could do alot worse than this bloke http://forums.deeperblue.com/members/venturesports.html

Anthony is the guy you need and i think he's still on holiday for the next week, but when he's back give him a try, good service and very good prices.

Good luck

Get your pal to join DeeperBlue.com, we could really do with some more regular reports from S. Wales. I expect visibility, tides & current will often be a problem round the Gower Peninsula - but I reckon it would be worth having a look around, esp. nearby spots like Mumbles, Bracelet Bay, Limeslade, etc. when conditions have been flat and calm for a while. It's pretty round there and offers good opportunities for angling, wind-surfing, surfing and rock climbing/bouldering too. The University there actually overlooks a beach :)

Pembroke is defo. prime spearing territory judging by reports from other forum members (inc. Robbo66 & TechDave).

Try MAKO. I bet they'll ship to you and there's no better outfit--bar none. If not--for a dshort range gun use a JBL d-5 which can be found on ebay reasonbly.

Cressi Comanche seems like a good choice to me (or Omer Excalibur/Cayman). For a beginner 75cm would be a good choice IMHO; that should be short enough for Gower & long enough for Pembroke.

I guess you could argue that the 60cm gun might be useful for Gower & the 90cm gun for clearer waters around Pembroke - but 75cm seems like an obvious choice (I'm sure some would disagree though). Also, for clear water, 90cm can be too short. The range difference is surprisingly small between a 75 and 90cm speargun, if you lay them out with the spear-line fully extended.

For Gower especially, buy and become familiar with the Tide Time Tables (or check them out on the BBC weather website - if you trust them).

Thanks for all your info guys, ended up getting the Cressi Comanche and I handed him one of my wetsuits, a spartan 3.5mm which fitted him great when we went for an outdoor swim a month ago!

Will get him to join as he has started doing some recon around the south of wales.
