I'm not sure if this is the right place for this on deeperblue but I saw some people ask some questions about spearfishing and I myself have some. Me and my buddie have been spearfishing in the dominican republic with homemade hawaiian slings... when our friend bought a speargun and we all started using his. But now I'm ready for my own and have been looking online for recomendations yet found it is quite difficult. I am fishing in depths about 10-15 meters... usually reef with caves, and I am not sure the length I should look for in a speargun. Recently I even saw a 4 ft. tuna which I couldn't get with my hawaiian sling. So I have a tight budget and don't want to go over $120. I found three spearguns which seem to be good and I was wondering if you guys had an opinion on them or could reccomend others. First the "Cressi Comanche" , then "Sporasub Instinct LX" and the "Beuchat Mundial Competition" . they all have the same price basically. I would appreciate all the help I could get!

P.S. the website I saw these guns was: www.subprof.com

I'd go with a 110cm, its a good length for what you described. For a little more money you can get a Rob Allen, which in IMO is a better gun. What part of the DR do you spearfish?

ok... I will check out those guns you mentioned. I spearfish on the north coast of the DR. Between sosua and cabarete. What are the advantages to a longer speargun?

Range, but you wouldnt want something too long. 110 is a good length for hunting on reefs, at the depths you mentioned. I've spent many summers at Sosua and Samana. Its been years since I've been there, I'm curious as to the spearfishing regulations??

There are some beaches where spearfishing is prohibited, but the locals have (and still are) showed me several reefs where they go. Honestly the fishing isn't that great but every once in a while you see a big one.
And about the spearguns.. lets say I didn't want to spend more for a Rob Allen... Which out of the 3 spearguns mentioned above, would you recommend?

If I was you Id go for the Beuchat out of the 3 you mention. But the RA is a sturdier gun by design :)

I have a Commanche 90 and would say that it is a good very accurate gun for lighter applications like here in Europe, but not ideal for what you describe that you might come across. I agree the Beuchat but would try even to get a good condition 2nd hand sturdier gun with 7mm spear.

Hello tengosurf! I,m from Sosua. I know a litle bit about that area from Cabarete, El canal, La laguna, etc. Due to overfishing I will say those fishes are very scary on that area, I think a speargun like the Comanche 100cm or 110cm with a 6mm shaft will be a good choice for those fast moving target. Welcome..rofl

Hi guys, I'm moving this to the speargun forum. Bienvenidos los de la DR, vivi alli en los años 70. :)

Hello! About speargun help, I like eating those tasty goatfish, which will be a best choice of gun to spear them, Seatec Gabiano Open 77cm or Omer Gold82cm. By the way I owned a Excalibur 82cm, very good gun but I,m looking to improve.rofl

No real need to change from the Excalibur, IMHO.
However, between Gabbiano 77 and XXV Gold82, I've had them both and loved them both: first class spearguns but they are really two different guns.
The Gabby is big and sturdy, with lots of metal parts, more solid and more accurate. Downside: with a reel, the Gabby 77 becomes negatively buoyant (doesn't float with reel mounted)
The XXV gold is slim and light, more hi-tech, very quick and manouverable. Downside: the 82cm feels a bit muzzle-heavy and is more vulnerable to scratches.
Hope this helps Tommy.

Have any of you guys ever heard of sporasub spearguns? What are the pros and cons to them? And if their are any other guns you guys know of under $120 thats a better gun... please let me know! haha.

i have many guns, but the one i use 90% of the time is the omer excalibur 100 carbon , i also took down many fish with the comanche 60 and 75....i agree with spago, no need to improve on it, but i know the illness :) its not about effectiveness or improving , you have to get the new nicer one :)
I think i might start a support group :)

I'm a big Sporasub fan but the last gun I bought and still use is a black viper; not as sexy as some guns but sturdy and a good workhorse. Their airguns are good, based on good old Mares technology.

HI tengosurf, as most say, the good(wouldnt say ideal) length and gun is the 90 or 100 carbon cressi or omer but if you are not a poser the alloy ones are just as effective in good hands:martial, you can beef them up for larger fish(thicker and extra bands) and if you are worried about sturdiness rig up a breakaway system , i fish the "sometimes warm" :) waters off Cyprus mostly for Grouper, Duskys in the caves and the bigger striped grouper on the wrecks, i plugged a 12k amberjack on a Omer T20 75 alloy barrel and it held up to the challenge very well, it depends just as much on how you handle the fish as well as the equipment you use, so find a gun you feel comfortable with for the price you want to pay and enjoy the sport .

Happy hunting

Peter.

Thanks Spaghetti. Sometimes in trying to get the right speargun we forget to adat ourselves better to their enviroment(fish) to be more efective.

AMEN! I'm loving my Gabbiano 77, but my previous Sporasub Aspic 75, which I had paid just 40 euros shiny new, caught lots of fish too.

and by the way Marwan, this is amazing: I get most of my fish with the Comanche 60 (kitted for hole/kelp with 5 pronger and reel), and the Excalibur 100 Carbonium has been my flagship gun for years. We have so much in common...

Tomy yes definitely: choosing the right gun depends on type of fish, type of bottom, techniques. I don't know what fishes you hunt in your tropical waters and how, so I couldn't tell what's the right gun for you.

I can't help you decide between the 3 spearguns mentioned - but looks like others have provided good advice. However, I think the chart on the sumora website is one of the clearest & best guides to choosing the correct length of speargun (also talk to local spearos and find out what has worked best for them): sumora, official distributors of Rabitech and Rob Allen
