Hy everybody, I only wanted to ask some Questions.
I´ll go to Croatia in about 4 weeks and I wanted to know some things about C.

I´m equipped with a 3mm wetsuite,Mares Mask and Immersion Longfinns.
Which gun should I take with me, the 75cm Rubberband or asmall Peumatic? What would be better, and which point, Singlebarb or multiprong ?
I´ll be in Moscenice Draga, where can I buy the nescessary licence for spearing, and can I use a small boat for carrying the equippment?
And last but not least, what fish will I see, is there anywhere a list with Fotos, i´ll only dive at the coast in deppths between 3 and 7m how big are those fish.
What about sharks.? thanks mike

i was in makarska a year and a half ago and the water was beautiful. the fish were small and scarce and they were down deep. i dove over some wrecked boats and along pinnacles but there was not really a fish worth spearing. i checked out 4 -5 sites and saw small mullet and a lot of urchins. i smashed urchins to lure the fish but nothing large enough to spear came into view. saw some slipper lobsters though, didnt take any at all.

i think that if you go, try blue water hunting and bring a really long gun. where i was fish were scarce and nobody wanted anyone spearing in "their" waters . i tried to get a license at arbonne in makarska and they were hesitant to sell me one so i just speared sans license. glad i didnt spend money on it as the fish were not around. i was diving up to 20-23 meters max. i used a 115 cm gun and did not pull the trigger a single time in a week spent there. pretty water though.

good luck, enjoy the waters, bring a suit thicker than a 3mm if you have, maybe a 5 is ok. i used 2.5 and got COLD.

please tell us how your visit goes, good luck!

john

Water temperature in four weeks will bi more than 23°C so 3mm wetsuit is OK. Bring a 75sm gun!!! I don’t know where is Moscenice Draga so I can't tell you for the license. But DO NOT FISH WITHOUT IT!!! If police catch you, then you have big problems. It is very hard to get it and it is quite expensive (150HRK for 3 days, 300 HRK for a week and 600 HRK for a month). If you have a boat you can come to really good places for spearfishing. There are lots ob places bad for fishing but you can get information from local guys. Contact on http://www.submania.hr/forum/default.asp (best Croatian forum) or look at pictures at http://www.submania.hr/ . You can catch very big European Seabass or Gilthead Seabream in depth to 7 meters and lots of other fish. No sharks.

You will have nice holidays!

Regards Jure

No sharks:t :t .
Water temperature now is 20°C, this weekend i had dived in 3mm suite.
You can have two gun in the boat per person, don't spear with pneumatic gun because you will not see any fish :t :t

Hvar is really one of the most beautifulplaces for holidays. I am going there for 19 years. There are good places for fishing, but they are deep.

Vedrana možem li ja doč? :t

Hi Mike,

- I would take a 5mm suit if u have one, or jacket 5 and trousers 3mm; but 3mm is ok too, spring is hot this year.

- Both guns you mention are small and they will just allow you to catch animals that let u come pretty close like maybe octopus or scorpena or some small barbs or labrids. The point is that fish in Croatia is very shy and knows a lot about spearos. So I figure with these small guns it will be rather difficult to get some more "noble" prey. I would take at least a 90cm gun to try for some breams or mullets by doing "aspetto" or "agguato". But then again, if you just whish to "collect" what u find during long accurate research in holes and crevices and under/between boulders, the small guns are ok.
Concerning the point of the shaft to use, it depends on the way u fish like I said before. When I used a 70 pneumatic years ago i often took the multiprong. The shot has not to be long anyway, its not that delicate like the single point and it forgives you bad aiming (one of the 3 or 5 spikes could hit the target when the others miss).

- u get the license in a tourist office in opatija, where u pass through when u go to M.D. I can't describe u exctly where it is just ask in the first tourist office u find there on the way and they will tell u.

- what do u mean by "small boat"? Just an inflatable without motor, with motor? Dont forget that if your boat is equipped with outboard motor stronger than 6 hp u need a boat license.

- Fish u will see in shallow water:
Lots of labrids (not to shoot, no good taste), smaller breams of the genus Diplodus, small gilthead breems (sparus auratus) too, some mullets, if lucky some sea bass; small scorpenas (spare them, they mostly are just babys), on sandy ground maybe barbs and some marble bream (pagellus mormyrus).
And who knows what else ...

Oh, I forgot, u will see lots of sharks :t :t

Cheers,

Ivo
