After tireless debate with a friend of mine, I submit a question to the minds of this community: Can one spear mahi-mahi (dolphin) under weed lines in blue water?
I maintain that it is very possible as long as one has the proper rigging, ie a floatline system, but he believes a reel is better if you can land one. So, before we resort to a knife fight, can someone help out? We spear in South Florida, so anyone from there knows what I mean.
Many Thanks,
ElCid

Hey el, did you go to the Citadel?

I'm in Charleston bro. yes you can spear mahi under weedlines...we shot some last year on them (small)

you can use either reel or float...they have soft flesh and tear off easy so put a good head shot on em.

for bigger ones (over 30lbs) I'd recommend a float...thing is, when you're in the area to encounter a mahi, then you're in the area for ANYTHING...I'd recommend a float line.

Yeah, I'm here at The Citadel! Do you spear much up here? I've done some diving but don't know anyone who dives and spears.

ps, as for how mahi act...
they are relativley easy to get close to, just no sudden movments and the least noisse possible. they will come to you on the surface but if you drop down below the surge you can steady your shot.

let them circle closer and closer in...kind of like ducks when they circle into decoys.

Hey Stretch, sorry to have missed the proper date but Happy Belated Birthday! And good hunting, of course.

why thank you sir!

hope you're bustin up the fish yourself too!

The weather here needs to settle down, inshore can be hunted but its a bit dirty even for the Jedi Diver standards. But the the cold weather should bring the grouper and snapper in soon!!!
