Hi. Just wondering if someone can shed some light on spears for me. After years of using my Immersion railgun, I have finally managed to put a wee bend in the end of it. I am still using it, but am now looking at a replacement.

My current spear is a 6mm, and it looks like stainless to me, but I don't honestly know. I have been told that spring steel is the way to go, but I must confess I have very little knowledge on the jargon with regards to spears, and whether, say, a Spetton spear will work on my gun.

I am more of an inshore diver, but in New Zealand we have a Kingfish (which I think are called Yellowtail in other countries) and I would like to know that the next time I see one, I can nail it without worrying about my spear ending up like a paper clip. These fish are built a bit like tuna and a reasonable one is about 40lbs/18kg. Is 7mm really the thinnest I should go?

Can anyone give me some inside tips and experience-based knowledge?

Cheers,

A spetton spear will work as will any euro spear but I can highly recommend Rob Allen spears in an Imersion gun
