Hey everyone, first time poster here. ive been doing a bit of spearfishing this last few months (mid vancouver island region), just taking cod and greenling, wondering what else there is that could be possible for me to gather while im down there. ive seen lots of scallop and abalone vids from the states and i know your not allowed to gather abalone up here, i dont know about shellfish but its to warm anyhow. just wondering if there are other good species of fish i could go for or and of species of animals i should keep an eye out for? cheers for any help!

fish species are listed on regs, there are areas and open seasons and bag limits in there. Just google fishing reg BC and I am sure you will find it. Apart from fish, there is a lot of food in Pacific waters here in BC. I pick sea cucumbers, those are found just about anywhere, some areas are more abundant than other ones. Sea urchins are not so much, though some places are literally covered by urchins like carpet, especially now in September with newly spawned urchins. Crabs are also everywhere and I am yet to find a spot where there are no crabs. Dungeness maybe not so much but Red Rocks are abundant. You can always take one or two dog fish (small sharks), I am sure they are open for taking year around with some plentiful bag limit. Dog fish is fun to watch, it is big and beautiful fish. Taste is so-so but it has very "specific" qualities, rich in protein and such. I am yet to figure out how to pick geoducks, can't dig them on a single breath hold. But them geoducks are abundant in some areas, and they are big hunks of quality food. Basically, I never just "freedive", always fill by bag with something edible. Mussels and of course oysters are everywhere, but this is rather "general public" food, no need to freedive for those.
