Sphera and scratches

Hi all,

Does aynone of you have same problem with mask Sphera as I have? After about 8 months of using ( 4-5 days a week ) I have noticed slight scratches on face glass. It´s still ok under the water but I can hardly see through it If I get out. I cannot imagine the reason whats happened with it , I do carry it always in a box and sometime clean with pure water…Up to now it was a great mask. Thanks for your explanation.

That almost looks like some problem with the lens coating - but bottom line is Spheras scratch. Near as I can tell there is no way to avoid it. Upside is they are cheap to replace. I had one where the coating on one lens sort of bubbled off right in the center of vision after one dive - I exchanged it for a new one but everyone I know who uses them says you pretty much have to plan on replacing them periodically.

did u spray anti fog on these lenses? i can see that these r not scratches...they r more into internal breaks as if u kept it in the freezer then dipped in hot water or visa versa.

Some solvents do that to plastics. Have you tried to clean them with something?

yes I washed couple times (2x-3x) with water and liquid soap :-(

I was prepared to reply "yeah, it scratches, get used to it". But what is shown in the picture is not in my opinion normal.

Mine is pretty banged up. It's over 2 years old now. I sometimes use the case, sometimes not. Throw it around, have it in my gear back unprotected, even washed it with a toothbrush which left huge scratch marks all over. Basically, I abuse it. But it looks nowhere as bad as yours.

I'd say it's got to be something else. Like someone suggested, it doesn't look like scratches actually, more like burns or a chemical reaction or something. Or then someone is just playing with your mask behind your back

I agree something weird is up with that one. Maybe pool chemicals over time?

yes, I using mask lot of time in the pool with chlorine water and another pool with salt water.

Very strange, normally the question would be, do you keep it in the back of the car bouncing around with the rest of your kit for weeks at a time but seeing as you keep in in a box. Weird is the word.

The problem is the antifog spray. Use only antifog for plastic lens.

I can think of a few organic solvents that would do that to the lenses, but I doubt chlorine or liquid soap would.

Anything else you've used on the lenses before?

OK... my turn.

Heat. Have you washed them in hot water, left them in your car? Heat will craze the coatings on your lenses (which is what has happened).

Acetone?

Left them soaking in water for a long period of time? (weeks)?

No, I never left them in car, every in box and bag. I remember sometimes I use in whirpool where is warm water 38°C. It is maybe reason. Ok, thanks for your ideas and resolution is buy new one but I dont know if have to buy Sphera again, or Micromask with glass.

if u buy a new one. read the manual properly. I was surprised when i read it 2 years back. i think they said u cannot even spit on the lense!
